Borderlands 4 Announced

The headline announcement at gamescom Opening Night Live is Borderlands 4, confirming Randy Pitchford's hints that a new installment in Gearbox Software's looter-shooter series is in the works. It was introduced through a short gameplay-free trailer that concludes saying to expect it next year on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store as well as on consoles. There's not much to go on yet, but a preliminary Steam Listing is live with the following scant description:
The definitive looter shooter arrives in 2025. Wishlist now.

See if you have what it takes to go down in history as a legendary Vault Hunter as you search for secret alien treasure, blasting everything in sight.

I'm not sure how I rolled such a great grenade early in B3, (and I forget all the monikers the games uses to identify the properties) but I was able to throw out 2 (maybe 3?) with one throw, they bounced all over the place, they spit shrapnel, and they exploded at the end. Holy shit that was a fun grenade, I ran with that for so long....way after I was over-leveled for it. Was never able to get such a great synergy of effects in another one.

Those are Bouncing Betties. I'm sure that they are in BL3 but some people say that they are more rare in that game. I don't know which is true but I do know RNG can be a bitch sometimes.

What was the "graphic glitch?"
For an unplayable game B2 still scores ~80% on both metacritic / opencritic including both user and critic reviews.

I'd love to see some huge poll done to figure out what genres the gaming community is most interested in these days. Like the souls-like games, I just *feel* not many are wanting another looter-shooters same-shit-different-coat kinda game.

We need more high quality RPGs. I started up Dragon Age Origins again, and because the writing is so good it actually aged really well. Just left the Circle of Magi to become a Gray Warden. And yes, I do this in preparation for The Veilguard, although I'm 85% sure that Gen Z game will end up being some hot fucking garbage. I've never seen so much purple and cartoonish graphics in the DARK FANTASY genre. 🤦
I thought Hollywood had hit rock buttom. Then this happened.

I know there have been indie devs who have been able to make games, or significantly expand the scope of games, due to the Epic pay-out. Especially as this pay-out comes early in development, so they can keep the lights on before they have anything to sell. That's pretty cool, and it seems fair for Epic to want some sort of exclusivity for this.

A Borderlands game, or other big budget title? Nah, exclusives for those suck.

That Fortnite warchest is getting lighter by the monthly. Nothing would please me more than to see Epic completely eliminate third-party exclusives. It's been an anti-consumer pox on PC gamers since they launched that store of theirs.

If the improve the gameplay and the horrible writing, maybe it'll be worth a buy, at 50% off.

A STEAM listing! Very interesting. So when Epic doesn't offer them money up front, they decide to release on both platforms at the same time. I wonder why that is. Maybe because the gaming mass tends to congregate on Steam... no, it couldn't be that...

There was an article about how the exclusivity program wasn't working out that well for Epic; it wasn't bringing in as many new customers as they'd hoped. It's likely that the amount of money Gearbox was asking for Borderlands 4 was far more than Epic was willing to pay.

Either way, it's good for gamers. Nobody really liked Epic locking games up as exclusives.

The shifts they did over the course of BL3's lifetime generally improved the game from a mechanics level. The fact that it was basically impossible to farm with friends without exiting and restarting killed any replay value for me. None of the games have had what I would consider a good story despite having several entertaining/interesting characters and the only story bits that really stuck with me at all were some of the DLC. Hopefully they don't fall too much into the games as a service type trap that so many ARPG style games have.

As if this poor franchise hasn't suffered enough between Borderlands 3, the Pre-Sequel and the movie. :'(

I love every Borderlands game. Even 3, which had some of the most insufferable villains that I have ever seen in a game. The best villains make you hate them, or maybe hate yourself for thinking they are awesome; these made you cringe so hard that you might pull a muscle. Still, I found the game terrific overall. So yeah, Pitchford is a clown, but I am happy for Borderlands to keep going.

BL is an OK series. I personally always enjoyed playing it with my kids. It was never really about the story or even the gameplay for me. Sort of like Diablo. After D2 I didn't care about the story, gameplay or anything else. It had all been done before. It was really about being able to play with the kids.

Given that, this trailer did nothing but announce the game. Could have just saved time and posted an update that it was in development. I cannot imagine the money and resources they wasted putting that together just to say it was in development. I only care about gameplay trailers and even then, I want to see something more than just a couple of action videos.

You say that like it was ever supposed to be even a pretend secret. Did anyone claim that Epic exclusivity isn't due to a nice pay-out?

A LIGHT day! Very interesting. So when it's not night time, outside is brighter. I wonder why that is. Maybe the sun radiates light ... no, it couldn't be that...

That will be without me. I hated Borderlands 3, felt like the game was just wasting my time. If they can't kick it up a notch and proove they can have another iconic chaacter and a game not filled to the brim with useless quests...

Simple.
If they can make a game with B.L. 2 quality, it will be super successful.

I think that apparent burnout is an effect of poor or bad products (see D&W, suddenly no superhero burnout anymore, the allure is rediscovered, or replay Tiny Tina B.L. 2 DLC and it's as good now as then).

I got bored halfway through Borderlands 3 and barely scratched the Tiny Tina spinoff, so this one will probably be a pass.

Useless teaser trailer aside, Borderlands always feels like a wasted series to me. Powers were too few and mostly weak, guns were far too numerous and mostly garbage, gameplay was a rehash in the sequels. I am sure they made billions, but they could have ended up with far better actual games.
