Atari 7800+ Announced

Revived publisher Atari announces the Atari 7800+, expected to launch this winter as a scaled-down "faithful" update of the original Atari 7800 console system from 1986. Like its forebear, this will run both Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges. Modernizations include HDMI support for modern TVs, a wireless controller with USB charging, and a brand-new sequel on a 7800 cartridge. Development and launch of the original 7800 was disrupted by one of first times the Atari name changed hands, and then had a rocky run during the rise of Nintendo, but the announcement refers to it as a "best-seller." The Announcement Trailer touts preorders. Here's more:
The 7800+ is a scaled-down, compact edition of the console that seamlessly integrates into modern living spaces. Equipped with HDMI connectivity, it effortlessly links to contemporary TVs and devices. Each console ships with the CX78+ Wireless Gamepad and a brand new title, Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest — a sequel to the classic Crystal Castles, presented on a specially designed 7800 cartridge.

Console Features:

  • Plays both Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges
  • Near-perfect compatibility with original and third-party Atari games
  • Includes the new Wireless CX78+ Gamepad
  • Widescreen or 4:3 window size
  • USB-C charging cable (power adapter not included)

rocky run during the rise of Nintendo

You mean, getting demolished by Nintendo?

Kryten: “Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb.”

Shame Rikki & Vikki can no longer be bought for the system. By far the best game ever made for it. The library is very lackluster without homebrew in general.

If you can't think of anything that moves tech forward, then just go backwards. Wow, I can play games in 4:3 again! Here, take my money so that I can relive the low tech of my childhood

Bunch of borderline unplayable games just emulate them. Consoles really didn’t become worth touching until NES or more so SNES/Genesis.

I remember the good old days of GameTap. They had all the old console games available for online gaming. Some could be downloaded as well.

Loved that service. Was sad to see it go.

Wish someone could give me retro streaming games for something like $2.99 a month. I'd happily pay that for a big selection and nice interface.

I'm sure that both people who buy these will be very happy.

I'm happy that there is a realistic way to preserve gaming history now. But I don't expect that too many modern gamers are chomping at the bit to play ''Pitfall'' or "Night Driver".

lol, I had a 7800. All the kids in the neighborhood were getting NESs and my mom got me a 7800. Wasn't mad. Some of the games were okay. Really liked Ballblazer. But largely went unplayed.

Just let it die. Stop. Seek help. No one, including me who was alive for the originals, are jonesing for a modern 2600 or 7800.

Time and technology have moved on. If you, Atari, want to wow people...dump the hundreds of billions in to chip design and come up with something to end the stagnancy in personal computing.
