From the article:
Schreier said he didn’t feel the Bungie fanbase would be enthusiastic about a PvP extraction shooter

^ bit of an understatement there. I loved the Marathon Trilogy back in the 90s. When I heard that Bungie was making a new Marathon game I was excited for approximately 3 seconds until I realised what they were doing with it.

Bungie's old-school fans don't want to see Marathon as an extraction shooter, and their new fans don't know or care about the Marathon setting. It's a lose-lose scenario.
Same boat. I never really played them, I was more into the original Halo games, but I read a lot about the story in the Marathon games which really intrigued me.

So when they announced a return to the franchise I was genuinely interested, up until the reveal that they were dredging up their revered IP only to use it's name as cred for yet another extraction shooter.

I'm not sure why anyone signed off on bringing Marathon back as an extraction shooter. Going by a chunk of the commentary I saw when they revealed it a lot of other people wondered the same. When you've got a successful franchise that's effectively games as a service turning another franchise into the same type of thing is generally a recipe for failure.

I wonder if Embark is going to reverse course on ARC Raiders and go back to the PvE only as i feel they were also trying to jump on the PvPvE extraction bandwagon way too late too.
When I saw the reveal for this my first thought was "oh is a western dev doing an EDF style game?" until I saw the PvPvE/extraction part of the announcement and immediately lost all interest. Hopefully they do opt to pivot as the concept certainly seems sound.

I can't see this game having any chance at being successful. Looking at how hard Concord flopped in its recent test even though it's more of an Overwatch clone, I think we can see the market doesn't want new IPs for these games. I wonder if Embark is going to reverse course on ARC Raiders and go back to the PvE only as i feel they were also trying to jump on the PvPvE extraction bandwagon way too late too.
