Out of the Blue

I managed to carve out some time to go back to my toilet project yesterday and got everything worked out. I joked about it, but the relief I feel now illustrates how much my initial failure hurt my ego. During my previous effort I managed to ruin one of the rubber washers for the tank attachment to the seat, so the project couldn't continue without replacing that. The hardware store actually had a Kohler-branded gasket kit, so it's almost good news that this sent me looking for that, because it worked much better than the "universal" gasket I tried at first. But after getting the tank properly attached a small leak from the water intake remained. I tried cleaning the seal but it still dripped. So ignoring professional plumbing advice, I used some Teflon tape on the threads. This is supposed to be a pressure seal, but I think the male and female ends don't match up the same way internally as they did with the previous toilet guts. Taping the threads worked fine, and all is well. Now I just need to figure out if I think this tape hack is a problem and I should still replace the feed line, or just be happy that it's all working. In the meantime, I'm pretty pleased with my installation, as it looks like new, and the flushing action that used to feel like something would break now is as smooth as butter. So best Teflon tape practices aside, this has restored some of my self-respect.

I went from a 3440x1440p 90hz panel to a same res 144hz a few years ago, and yeah, I'd never go back. Games feel liquid smooth. It will spoil you.

Just upgraded my gaming PC from a 5800X to a 5800X3D in anticipation of Satisfactory 1.0 coming out next month. It's one of the games that greatly benefits from the X3D cache architecture.

I loaded my largest factory save, and saved the game at a spot staring at the center of the factory, which hits the frame rate the most. I went from 66fps to 90. On another save with a less complex factory, the FPS went from 136 to 168. I'm totally happy with that.

Also saw substantial improvements in two games that are known to love the X3D that I happen to own: Borderlands 3 and GTA 5.

I was tempted to to switch to an AIO water block for CPU cooling, but I'm just an old fossil and I like my big ass Noctua NH-D15 air cooler, but damn what a pain in the ass to get that big cooler out, and put it back in.

The secret to surviving cancer is catching it early, which means regular checkups. The assumption is rich people can afford healthcare and have more free time and so see their doctor more often. The reality is that people hate going to the doctor for annual checkups. Even rich people just say 'fuck it I'll see the doctor when I'm sick'. By then it may be too late. My doctor likes to do 6 month blood workups, because 90% of serious conditions can be caught early through them.

The rich also sometimes think they can just bypass normal treatments with some fancy trip to a spa or something. Look at Steve Jobs. They caught his cancer very early. There is zero reason he should have died from it. But he was was afraid of going under the knife, and tried all kinds of crazy natural 'cures' and stalled for years until it was too late.

Welcome to the party, pal. I had 144 @ 1440 several years ago, and then waited till the 4k version was reasonable before moving up. I think it's a really great upgrade, but easy to get used to, so you take it for granted pretty quick.
So cool! 👍

My second display is 4K 60 Hz, but since I only game on the main 4K, I didn't see the need to dual 144 Hz. So far, it's working great. There's a noticeable smoothness on the 144 Hz display for scrolling and similar tasks, but overall, it's a smooth experience between both displays. I'm so glad I upgraded—it was the missing piece in the puzzle.

This upgrade has a curse: You get used to it, and suddenly even 75fps feels like shit, and you end up wanting/needing to upgrade your GPU way more often than when you were cruising on 60fps.

As for high fps movies: absolute shit. It feels like you're right there on the set, and everyone looks like silly actors with silly costumes.
I thought Hollywood had hit rock buttom. Then this happened.

That's how it "looks" to me: everything in lifelike motion. It also feels almost too real and eliminates the screen tearing I was experiencing in games like Guild Wars 2.

I think that is just another form of classism because it goes both ways. I think it also helps people to delude themselves in to finding another, different reason to dislike and distrust the ultra wealthy and elites instead of focusing on reasons that they, themselves, can affect. It's easy to come up with completely delusional reasons that require no action on the part of the person believing in that delusion.

Those same folks say these two lies, often in the same breath:

1. Cancer is totally curable but they don't cure it because there's too much money to be made.
2. Rich people have the cure.

They tend to stfu when a mega rich person dies.

Given how YouTube has become worse, become a place to disseminate medical misinformation, Christian nationalism, fascism, thinly veiled racism, Nazism, flat earth horseshit, and other nonsense, I would argue that her being "shitty at business" has done a massive disservice to humanity as a whole. That's the size of the picture I am looking at.

This actually is a pretty interesting article. Right now it only supports two speeds but it solves a lot of problems with internal drives.

As for braided lines, they can help with over pressurized (typical is 80 psi) water systems but aside from that regular lines are fine.
An over pressurized line can cause other types of failures though.

I had to long haul over to Woodland, CA's Best Buy from Elk Grove to pick up my 4K 144 Hz display (30 minutes on a typical Saturday). Unfortunately, I encountered construction on the I-5 freeway* that slowed the trip time to 40 minutes (a welcome sight as they're finally getting that stretch of freeway repaved). I noticed the southbound lanes were worsening, so I made a mental note to find an alternate route back home. Apple Maps suggested Old River Road. Not only did ORR bypass all the I-5 South construction and backed-up nonsense, but the drive was beautiful. Lots of nature on ranches to the west side with the beautiful Sacramento River on the east (plus a few boats with beautiful women in their Saturday best). ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Will travel it again if I'm in the neighborhood. Race

Over here on the West Coast, particularly in California, we don't pay road tolls (though we do have bridge tolls like the Golden Gate Bridge), so we call them "freeways." Technically, we do pay tolls as a road tax somewhere... I don't remember if it's included in the sales tax, income tax, county tax, or one of the other taxes.
