Updated DOOM + DOOM II Released

From QuakeCon in Dallas comes news that the original DOOM and DOOM II have been updated, and a combined package of both is now available for PC and consoles. This adds support for up to 16 player online deathmatch and co-op with cross-platform support, a mod browser (BOOM compatible), an optional new soundtrack, an optimized renderer with 4K/120hz support, and more. This post on Steam discusses the news and offers an Official Trailer with a look. This is called the "definitive enhanced version," of id Software's seminal first-person shooters, and the Windows edition of the package is available on the Epic Games Store, GOG.com,* and Steam. Those who own either of the original games on any of those get the upgrade for free, while the games also remain playable on Steam in their previous forms. Also included is a new deathmatch pack featuring 25 maps, a new Legacy of Rust expansion with new demons and weapons, as well as previous official and semi-official episodes TNT: Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, Master Levels for DOOM II, No Rest for the Living, and John Romero's Sigil. Here's word:
Now the definitive, newly enhanced versions of DOOM + DOOM II are available in a single combined release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, in addition to PC platforms and Game Pass (subscription required). This definitive enhanced version is our biggest effort yet with online cross-platform Deathmatch and Co-op for up to 16 players, community-published single-player mod support (with in-game mod browser), optimized renderer, accessibility options, optional modern IDKFA soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult (including brand-new DOOM II recordings) selectable alongside the original MIDI soundtracks, presented in up to 120hz in 4K on supported platforms (see FAQ below for details) and a brand-new episode “Legacy of Rust,” with new weapons and demons made in collaboration by individuals from id Software, Nightdive Studios and MachineGames.

Bought it only to find out that you can't bind the following keys for keyboard play:
- turn left
- turn right
- strafe
essentially stiffing old school keyboard-only Doom players like me. Caveat emptor. I got my money back and will wait for the patch.
Apparently, you can fire up the DOS only version if you really want to play with those keys, but then what's the point of buying the new fangled port?

Is this accurate for Steam? I have both games on PS, Xbox and Steam. On the PS and XBox I already have the upgrade available for free, and now in my library. For Steam, even though I own both of the original games, it says I have to pay $9.99 for this version. Am I missing something? Is this only for a new, new version of DOOM that is available on Steam?

I would like to point out that I am using Linux (Linux Mint to be specific) and simply installing this from steam and running it caused my entire system to lock up and I had to hard reset. Bad juju!

I got through the menus, picked which soundtrack etc, when it went to start the game (or go to the main menu, i don't know, it didn't make it that far!) my screen just went black and then my monitor turned off as it got no signal. The music was still playing in the background but not even my keyboard LEDs were responding anymore. Fun times...

Since this does not have an official Linux native port, you're running it through Proton. Try changing the version of Proton that you are running through the Steam UI. Go up one (which may be Proton Experimental if you are already running the latest stable release) and try again. If that fails, go down to the second most current release.

Are you by any chance using an Intel 13th or 14th generation CPU?

Why does DOOM with OpenGL always look like shit? It doesn't do it justice!

I'm not impressed with Nightdive's use of their Kex engine as much others are. Much worse performance than most custom engines that use Vulkan. Ok it still runs at 100s of fps, but nothing like the 4500fps I'm seeing with vkQuake with framerate unlocked or the 1000fps cap in gzDoom for examples. It's not all bad news though this is still a great little package with tons of classic Doom/Doom2 map and mod enough to play until you get sick of the game.

Was hoping for a Q3A remaster like they did Q1 and Q2 over the past few years, oh well. Maybe next year.

No RTX, no sale.
Why is No VR.
should have the VRs
For that you have to add 3D models for foes, weapons, ammo and diverse artifacts

Note for RE9 only (rest don't read):
Finished the Doom 3 orig. +ROE Phobos mod (ep 1,2,3).
Just epic.
Got so crazied that I'm playing now other fan campaigns.

Terrific list of Doom 3 campaigns, single player levels, and also total conversions.

Downloaded the ductape mod for an always on light, for machine gun and shotgun.

Add pak008.pk4 to any mod folder or the d3xp one, just changing the name to any that gets last when the paks are ordered alphabetically, and it works (pak002.pk4 the same, but for ROE or its mods).

One can also open the pak008.pk4 with winrar and change other things, for example "damage" of bullets from 9 or 14 to 100 for instant kills if a mod is madly tough even on easy skill (like iResurrection, russian, deleted its 7th pack for an english menu).
