Yes it was. Maybe not in the newsgroups you visited, but there was definitely E/N posts in many of the alts on Usenet. Early text "memes", people ranting about weird, stupid shit, conspiracy theories, hookups, and all the other wastes of time found on current social media have their origins on Usenet.

Sure it did. The term didn't, but those are still social media platforms. And Myspace was beaten to the punch of more modern platforms by Friendster, Makeout Club, lipstick & cigarettes, six degrees, and more.
