No where can I find mention of what caused the injury, so I bet it’s safe to assume it was caused by his style of “singing.”
Not the biggest Aerosmith fan here, but there's no way he sings in that vocal range that well for 50+ years without blowing his voice out if he's not singing properly to begin with (ie-from the diaphragm). If he'd been throat singing all that time his voice would have lasted for about as long as David Lee Roth's did...about 10 years at most.
