Out of the Blue

Almost immediately after my discussion of the local Canada Geese situation the other day, I received a coincidental update on why we're seeing so many geese despite the HOA's annual removal of them from the property. Other residents noticed too, so this was the HOA's response to complaints of whatever nuisance they're causing. It explains the geese were indeed removed from the area during the spring, saying those we're seeing now have arrived here since then. The permit to remove them covers a specific period, which has passed, so their hands are tied. The birds don't bother us, so I don't mind, but I can't speak for our neighbors' experiences. I do, however, suspect the HOA's story is a bit of a cover-up. The geese I recently spotted have been around here since long before the goslings could fly, so unless they all drove or hiked here from somewhere, I think it's far more likely that some birds escaped the death squad. Good for them, I say.

Un-rounded-up Round-up

Asus is rad. I, too, have a Dark Hero, but mine is of the AMD variety--Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero, saddled with a Ryzen 9 5950x. I built this thing a few years ago but it's still a powerhouse. I of course had to pair it with an Asus Strix OC 3090 GPU.

Update: ASUS! You are awesome people!!!

So, while going through the ASUS manual, I found a page on recovering the BIOS if it fails or becomes corrupted during the updating process.

1. Download and copy the BIOS CAP file to a USB stick. I used the old version that was on the stick when I first assembled the computer.
2. Insert the USB into the USB port.
3. Turn on the system.

Not only did it recover the BIOS, but checking the System Information shows that it updated to the latest version: 1402! So it also salvaged the BIOS update.

Again, ASUS! I want to hug these guys for creating this BIOS recovery utility. What a time saver! 💗

My current Gigabyte MB has a dual BIOS. The main BIOS is normally used and is the one you flash when updating. The backup BIOS is read only, and in the case of a corrupt BIOS, the system will boot from the backup and copy the backup to the main BIOS.

We have a pair of Sandhill Cranes that live on our property. They have a young one right now. Gorgeous birds. Ours are used to people and fairly friendly. My 101 year old Dad loves talking to them in the morning on the porch.

During winter we get around another 12 that are snowbird visitors from farther north.

We also occasionally have a flock of semi wild turkeys that visit. Semi because while they won't get to close to us, real wild turkeys would never even get close enough to see. These are all descended from some caged turkeys a neighbor used to own 12 years ago, that escaped when their coop was attacked by a pack of coyotes. They must live in the nearby woods.

Wow, NASA and Boeing are really trying to save face with Starliner, but it sounds like a lost cause. I remember reading that there is a limit of 90 days before the seals in the fuel system start to deteriorate due to the corrosive effects of the fuel, and even a perfectly sealed helium loop (assuming there wasn't a leak) won't hold helium forever. Helium is such a small molecule it, slowly migrates out no matter what you do. And you need helium to pressurize the thrusters in zero gravity.

Okay now I’m pissed off with Intel. These idiots released a CPU with microcode issues that causes the CPU to pull voltage greater than the CPU can handle. One of first things recommended is to update the BIOS. So I download the latest BIOS for my ASUS 790z Dark Hero and run the UEFI’s easy flash update. No issues last two updates. The latest is sending my computer into a constant restart! ABSOLUTELY LIVID!!! 😡

What in the world is this nonsense?! ☹️

"HOA Hired Canadian Hitman to Make Problem Disappear."

"In a bizarre twist, a suburban Homeowners Association (HOA) took drastic and unconventional measures by hiring a Canadian hitman to tackle an invasion of Canadian geese. These feathered fiends had turned the neighborhood into a battleground, leaving behind a trail of droppings and honking chaos that drove residents to their wit's end. The HOA's desperate solution of hiring a hitman, more accustomed to taking out mobsters than managing migratory nuisances, came to light when the so-called "Goose Terminator" was apprehended by authorities, leading to widespread disbelief."

"The neighborhood was initially puzzled by the sudden disappearance of the geese, with some speculating they had finally heeded the 'No Trespassing' signs. But the truth, as it unfolded, was far more twisty. The hitman's covert goose-eradication operation involved night-vision goggles, decoy breadcrumbs, and an oversized net. The HOA members are now facing the pecking order of legal repercussions and public mockery, with residents jokingly nominating them for 'Most Creative Problem Solvers' in the annual community awards. Meanwhile, wildlife experts have taken over the situation, implementing humane methods to ensure the neighborhood remains goose-free and the community's sanity stays intact."

Oh yeah, even though it's preseason it's always good to see tackle football make its return. Can't wait for Fall and be done with his heat and humidity - and all the goddamned mosquitoes. Watched a bit of it last night and it definitely scratches that itch after a summer full of nothing but goddamned baseball and golf - Olympics aside.

Intel was a great stock option...if you worked there. We used to receive stock as bonuses and gifts. Back when I worked there, it split a few times and that was a massive windfall.
