I don't think you were sarcastic, were you? This works in European countries as well and it works precisely because of what you said. And if a company wants to keep you, you get a permanent contract. Then, you're so protected by employment law you can really start living and stop worrying. It's kinda glorious. I hate it that my kids won't experience that level of comfort here in the US unless things change. I'm kinda ignorant on employment law here though.
