A
xeet from John
Romero announces plans for a "proper big-box release" of
Catacomb 3-D,
the first-person shooter launched by id Software in 1991 (thanks
Time Extension via Frans). This is a piece of gaming history, as it is
considered the first modern FPS, and an enhanced version of its engine was used
to create
Wolfenstein 3D. The rerelease is an ambitious repackaging of a
33 year-old game, with three different versions priced at €69.95 (~$75.50 USD),
€89.95 (~$97.00 USD), and €154.95 (~$167.25 USD) due to the inclusion of various
physical items like a coffin USB drive, pins, and stickers. All boxes will be
autographed, and the pricier versions lean into the retro theme by including
floppy disks. On the other hand, for those who prefer to get their nostalgia on the
cheap, the entire Catacombs trilogy is on sale
on GOG.com, and the
Catacomb 3D source code
is freely available after being open-sourced
a decade ago in case you
want to compile your own copy. Here's a rundown on the contents:
