John Romero Announces Boxed Catacomb 3-D

A xeet from John Romero announces plans for a "proper big-box release" of Catacomb 3-D, the first-person shooter launched by id Software in 1991 (thanks Time Extension via Frans). This is a piece of gaming history, as it is considered the first modern FPS, and an enhanced version of its engine was used to create Wolfenstein 3D. The rerelease is an ambitious repackaging of a 33 year-old game, with three different versions priced at €69.95 (~$75.50 USD), €89.95 (~$97.00 USD), and €154.95 (~$167.25 USD) due to the inclusion of various physical items like a coffin USB drive, pins, and stickers. All boxes will be autographed, and the pricier versions lean into the retro theme by including floppy disks. On the other hand, for those who prefer to get their nostalgia on the cheap, the entire Catacombs trilogy is on sale on GOG.com, and the Catacomb 3D source code is freely available after being open-sourced a decade ago in case you want to compile your own copy. Here's a rundown on the contents:

Needs pathtracing so that even this ancient game will run at max 30 fps on an RTX 4090 or RX 7900 XTX.

Just kidding, of course.

You joke, but I watch Ross's Game Dungeon religiously on YouTube, and in more than one very old game he has trouble running the game at a playable framerate. It isn't because it's taxing his hardware; it has something to do with CPU speed and things like that iirc.

I remember a re-release of an Ultima game where because of the high CPU speed, you would starve to death immediately after starting the game. There was some program you had to use to massivley underclock the CPU to make the game playable.

Hey, maybe this is why they invented path- and raytracing? To slow down the GPU and CPU because otherwise games like Cyberpunk would run at an unplayable 4,096 fps and all the characters in game would be running like they were part of the Benny Hill show? Okay, this is my personal alternative fact of the day.
