-cash shop is expensive (you can't buy individual characters, they group them in pricey bundles)
You can buy individual characters if you go to the menu where you swap between them, and find purchase buttons for those you do not have. But as with all of these types of games, there are complaints about the fact that the intermediary currency cannot be purchased in such exact amounts. So you have to buy more and end up with extra, find something else to spend that on so you don't waste it, probably end up topping off again, etc.
The store and crafting menu both appear very overwhelming at first, so I'm not surprised to see so many negative impressions come from them. It takes a few hours before you start to get a feel for how the free grind is supposed to work. Definitely a lot of similarities to Warframe in that regard -- all of the other classes and high-powered 'Ultimate' weapons require multiple components spread across different mission reward pools or possibly coming out of mystery box items you have earn the chance to open up. THEN you have to wait for hours (or possibly days?) of real time for the "research" to complete, unless you wanna pay real money to speed that up. It's gonna be easier for most people to just ignore all of that bullshit entirely and play forever on their starter class with regular gear, which is how I treated Warframe. They do give you one additional class and fancy weapon by way of tutorials that attempt to illustrate the free unlock process, but beyond that... Be prepared for some tedium or to bust out the credit card.
