The First Descendant Launches

The First Descendant is now free-to-play for Windows on Steam and for consoles, kicking off a third-person looter-shooter from NEXON. This post has all the details on the official launch and the preseason that's now underway. Here's the launch trailer with a discussion of the news, and here are some details:
The First Descendant is a free third-person cooperative action RPG shooter featuring high-quality graphics. Experience the fun of strategic boss fights through 4-player co-op and various unique characters, exciting gunplay, and looting. A variety of equipment is necessary for growth, and you can obtain them through clearing scenario missions within the game or in the World Missions where cooperation is crucial and battles with huge bosses.

The player becomes a Descendant in the game and is given a mission to fight against the invaders for the survival of humans and to protect the ‘Ingris continent’. The player can experience a spectacular story by growing stronger through various missions and stories to finally discover the Descendants' secret. You can also feel the First Descendant’s unique atmosphere through high-quality fields developed with Unreal Engine 5 and gain a new experience of reality and SF fantasy coexisting in one place.

-cash shop is expensive (you can't buy individual characters, they group them in pricey bundles)

You can buy individual characters if you go to the menu where you swap between them, and find purchase buttons for those you do not have. But as with all of these types of games, there are complaints about the fact that the intermediary currency cannot be purchased in such exact amounts. So you have to buy more and end up with extra, find something else to spend that on so you don't waste it, probably end up topping off again, etc.

The store and crafting menu both appear very overwhelming at first, so I'm not surprised to see so many negative impressions come from them. It takes a few hours before you start to get a feel for how the free grind is supposed to work. Definitely a lot of similarities to Warframe in that regard -- all of the other classes and high-powered 'Ultimate' weapons require multiple components spread across different mission reward pools or possibly coming out of mystery box items you have earn the chance to open up. THEN you have to wait for hours (or possibly days?) of real time for the "research" to complete, unless you wanna pay real money to speed that up. It's gonna be easier for most people to just ignore all of that bullshit entirely and play forever on their starter class with regular gear, which is how I treated Warframe. They do give you one additional class and fancy weapon by way of tutorials that attempt to illustrate the free unlock process, but beyond that... Be prepared for some tedium or to bust out the credit card.

I've played about 6 hours now.

+free
+combat is fun
+runs fine on a modern gaming computer

-level design is pretty weak (I wish it was more open world than it is)
-limited starting characters to play (you slowly unlock characters doing missions)
-cash shop is expensive (you can't buy individual characters, they group them in pricey bundles)

12h in and pretty enjoyable so far.. its F2P, the story is a bit weird, the dialogues are cringe, the cutscenes are visually great but well, they also contain dialogue so...

All in all fun to play bastard child of Warframe, Destiny and probably a lot of other good lootershooters.

PS.: Don't buy a Bunny or a Freyna, you get them pretty much for free.

Lol, Basically said the same thing word for word under a youtube video about this game.

I wasn't surprised it was gonna suck, though. But that doesn't mean much coming from me: I even think Warframe sucks 😅
I thought Hollywood had hit rock buttom. Then this happened.

So another anthem mod?

Looter-shooter for Nexon no doubt. They should rename it the Cash Shop Datamining Game.

$MD

Cash Money Datamining. Or $MD is short for Cash MD.

How's the game play? It looks like Anthem but not as cool. IMO

I played a few hours today, it reminds me of Warframe mixed with Outriders, but structured like a mobile game (not surprising considering who made it). Visuals aren't very impressive despite UE5 and ray-tracing, and there's lots and lots of cringe to skip through between all the cinematics and dialogues, but the combat is fun enough and never stops unless you want it to. Overall not bad for a free PVE shooter game.
