XCOM and jagged alliance

Which ones?
Although, who am I kidding? I could easily play any of the XCOMs (well, no, not Terror from the Deep or the third), or the first two JAs right now.

I used to do a JA2 run once every 3-5 years. Same with the original XCOM. It's been a while now. I'd do a playthrough of the new XCOMs first, most likely, but I really just don't have the time anymore.

I am close to being in that situation. I had a stroke which makes it hard to play as much as I want but I can't work and I'm mostly bedridden a lot of the time. Which means I still have a lot of time to catch up on games that I haven't touched. And yet, more often than not, I'm playing the same old turn-based strategy games like XCOM and jagged alliance for the hundredth time. Not to mention I bought a brand new $5,000 computer last year only so I can play all of the greatest 2D side-scrolling platformers and retro JRPG's on it.

The question is, "How many billions of dollars have steam users spent on games that were played?"

Neither Joe Blow gaming "journalist" nor anyone else checking public profile data knows the actual price anyone paid for any game they own... The data being referenced is from one of those sites which calculates the "value" of your account (wildly inaccurate due to the aforementioned lack of price info, they simply assume full price), except here they also set a filter to only count unplayed games. Nevermind that that is also nowhere near accurate considering offline mode, now being able to mark games as private, and the fact that they didn't always track playtime. So even the number being arrived at BEFORE the asinine extrapolation is for entertainment purposes only.

Without seeing the methodology I'm not sure I would trust that dollar figure. How do they know what price was paid? Maybe I have a game in my library that costs $60 now but I bought it on sale for much lower. Or maybe a game was included in a bundle, or as a free giveaway.

Aye, there's the rub - and tug - of it. I'd wager most of those games were part of bundles or bought on deep discounts. I can't imagine paying AAA prices for a game they're never going to play. I'd be much more interested in seeing completion numbers. I've never finished probably 90% of the games I have. And others I've finished multiple times and sunk hundreds if not 1000s of hours into them.

Peoples garages and cupboards are full of stuff they paid for and never or almost never used, why should their Steam libraries be any different?
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

Um, Steam tracks pretty much all of this and MUCH more, of course. Steam is datamining central. They track when you fart while gaming.
On a more serious note, they obviously can not track the price of games/keys that were bought externally so if those are included in these stats at all (are they?) then they are probably going with the price of the Steam product at the moment the key was added which would indeed lead to some inflation of the numbers.

Their methodology leaves a lot to be desired in any case:

Out of all the registered Steam accounts in the world, only 10%, or about 73 million in SteamIDFinder’s database, are public. Based on data from those accounts, we calculate that collectively there’s around $1.9 billion / £1.4 billion worth of games that have been purchased and then never played even a single time. Times that by ten, to roughly account for all the Steam profiles that are not public, and you arrive at $19 billion, more than the gross national product of Nicaragua, Niger, Chad, or Mauritius.

^ That's a very rough way to extrapolate the alleged value of games never played. Besides, talking about datamining, the article was probably mostly written because they want you to enter your SteamID at the bottom of the article. It's pure clickbait to mine data. It's grade A bullshit.

There are so many good games out there, from good devs with good ideas, whether it is 1 person or 20, I feel compelled to support them, regardless if the game's genre appeals to me.

At some point, I shifted to only buying when I want to game, but that lasted like 2 years. It was cheaper to pay full price for something I'll play right now than 85% off 10 things I'll never play, but the temptation...

Same with Amazon. I used to be good at buying kindle books when I read them, but then I started finding like 10 books I wanted to read at once and buying them all was more convenient than wish listing. I started using Goodreads to try to remedy that...
