Out of the Blue

Happy 28th birthday to Quake, as it was on this day in 1996 that id Software's first-person shooter officially launched. For perspective, when it was brand new, a 28 year-old computer game would be Hamurabi from 1968. Quake was at the heart of the burgeoning 3D revolution of the time, and anticipation of its launch is what inspired the creation of this website. 1996 is long enough ago that it was a DOS game, and though Windows editions followed, but as time passed it became one of those older games that was difficult to enjoy on modern computers. Thankfully the enhanced edition that arrived a few years ago remedied this, and this important piece of game history can be enjoyed as intended to this day. Happy birthday Quake!

Birthday Round-up

I had a similar problem with Name. Prior to going all in on self-hosting, I used a different company to do some hosting for me. They got bought out by Name and a bunch of stuff that used to work straight up broke. That was one of the reasons I went in to self-hosting. If it was broke there was only one person to bitch at!

Wonder if you're getting my whole domain redirected for some reason?

Nailed it and that led me to some digging. If I switched to a VPN server outside of the United States, I tested Germany and Switzerland, I get the correct page. If I connect to a VPN server within the borders of the US, I get the 403. US Proton uses CloudFlare and Euro Proton uses Quad 9. But in the US there is an intermediate hop at private address that is a 10.X address.

Disconnected from the VPN (total pain in the ass since all LAN traffic is routed through it on the network level) and tried it again. OK, so now it works reliably.

Digging more and I am betting that they, US Proton, are using openresty as a proxy and load balance server on the US side.

Just for gits and shigs, I also tried a different VPN provider (not naming names because they're shady as fuck and I don't want to give anyone ideas) and hit the same 403 error but not openresty this time. Straight up Apache.

"OK," says I "fuck this. Let's see what happens if I spin up a simple caching proxy server locally." So I slap together a caching proxy server with Apache real quick and bypass the VPN entirely. Boom, instant 403.

It would appear whatever platform you're hosting on realllly hates caching proxy servers. Not bitching, but at least I can now understand why I couldn't connect initially.

Strange since I'm not using OpenResty - the site was made in FrontPage.

What happens if you just google "Flying Penguin's Quake Coop"?

Wonder if you're getting my whole domain redirected for some reason?

To commemorate the Quake anniversary, I will post a link to my "Flying Penguin's Quake Coop" website, which I probably setup year after Quake's release.

I took the page down several tears ago, figuring no one cared anymore, and got a bunch of emails from crazy people who apparently still like to run the original engines on voodoo hardware, complaining that they couldn't download things like the VIS transparent water patch files or OpenGL mini-port drivers on my site, that are apparently linked to from all over the Internet.

So it remains up, an ugly poster child of hideous Web 1.0 design. Enjoy:

Happy bday Quake. Still have the original qtest.zip on my backup drive. Still gave my original Q1 sleeve too. One of the most groundbreaking games ever. I was hoping for a Q1 sequel on id Tech 8 instead of another Doom but oh well.

Quake was the first game I bought for my first PC. I couldn't play worth a crap till I tried +mlook, and that lead to years or gaming. It seems so odd that it's been 28 years, I still remember seeing the brown games disk boxes on display at the store. Where did all those years go?
