Out of the Blue

I recently mentioned the scorching heat that's set in around these parts. It's real, and it's spectacular, but we're holding up. As scary as the heat wave is, scarier still is the realization this was a spring heat wave, as today is the first day of summer. The summer solstice officially arrives at 4:50 pm EDT, so I guess that's when to expect the heat to really set in? I probably shouldn't even joke about that. Anyway, it's not actually the longest day of the year (they're all 24 hours), but we will get a couple more moments of sunlight in the northern hemisphere than yesterday or tomorrow, so don't forget the sunscreen. And to our friends down under, happy winter. Feel free to heave a snowball in our direction if you get the impulse.

Impulsive Round-up

We‘ve been lucky with our climate change over here. Been so cold the past weeks I’ve had to wear a hoodie… in friggin June!

But I’m sure we will get our share of summer heat once the arctic air finally moves off. Going up to 27C next week they are predicting.

For a reality check for those complaining about the heat, it's pushing 50C in Riyadh right now. Try that on for size. The dry sauna's I visited in Europe averaged around 80C +/- and you only stay in for maybe 5 minutes. There were cooler ones in the 50C-60C range and they were still MFing hot.

My office is a pretty safe haven in an emergency, being partially subterranean. It's been in the 90s for days and right now it's 79F down here.

There's no particular reason for these to come from epigenetics when good ol' genetic evolution would be enough. The kids that aren't afraid of snakes aren't making more kids.

Hard disagree. My nephew exists and my sister loves snakes, even the venomous kind (though she is rationally careful about them). I have zero fear of snakes, either, and there may very well be mini burritos in my future.

But look at people who are afraid of the dark and cannot rationally explain why they are afraid of the dark. Only that they are. There are children who are instinctively afraid of the dark even without any sort of negative association. Where does that fear come from? Especially in light of that lack of a negative association. There's something that forms in our lizard brains in utero that imprints on some of us.

TIL:

There's a part of your brain that specifically exists to tell you not to hiccup because the default mode of your brain is to hiccup. Constantly.

In fact, there's a case study where a man, after suffering a minor cranial injury as a young man, lived with hiccups for 62 years straight until his death.

The AIDS Epidemic started in 1981 and Freddie Mercury died 10 years later at the age of 45.

Dr Anthony Fauci was in the thick of it and after the first 20 or so deaths realized they that they were dealing with a new disease. At the time, and for years to follow, there was nothing they could do for their patients. He described it as putting a bandage on a wound.
During that period many parents received the Triple Whammy; “Hi Mom, I’m gay, I have AIDS and I’m dying.”Worldwide over 40 million have died.

It sucks that Mercury is not here to enjoy this amazing accomplishment.

Actual conversation I had with a friend who lives in TN:

Them: "It's soooo hot!"
Me: "Dude...those are like fall temperatures here in Texas."
Them "How the fuck do you survive? It's like being on the surface of the sun!"
Me: "We have air conditioning and it is what it is. Life goes on. Be thankful you don't also have 80-90% non-precipitating humidity thrown in for extra 'fun'. Then you can add another 10-15 degrees to the measured temperature."
Them: "You live in Hell. There's no other way to describe it. You live in Hell."

/---\

I have long held the notion that genetic memory was the cause of irrational fears like the fear of spiders, snakes, darkness, and so on. Anything that would create trauma becomes an avoidance instinct that would be passed on to ensure survival. Though I think the authors of The Guardian are engaged in some very wishful thinking at the end of the article. None of the scientific data presented in the study suggests that positive values will engender an alteration of genetic material. Merely that the removal of trauma removes the association and returns the mice to their baseline. Compassion, trust, and curiosity are learned behaviors, imprinted by long observation of rote roles and actions, and run contrary to the baseline of the human condition.
