Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Reviews

One more day still remains before the Erdtree casts its shadow on Elden Ring. But reviews for the new Shadows of the Erdtree DLC have arrived, giving players of FromSoftware's action/RPG some help in deciding whether to pick it up. Not many sites are throwing shade, as this is getting an unusual number of perfect scores, and the PC edition currently boasts a 92 metascore on Metacritic. Here's a roundup:

Love that the DLC is more souls like, personally I prefer that, anyway I play with a ton of mods, specially velocity and super jump for shortcuts being more of a tourist than a fighter.

I played a few hours, it seems the offline mods seem to all still work, at least the ones I have installed, obviously. No Rune Loss, graphical tweaks like Ultra Widescreen, no film grain, larger draw distance, etc.

Miniboss hitpoints seem utterly massive, also I can barely tank 3-4 hits, but I've only found a few of the new leveling resource chunks.

Also there is a new annoying shielded knight with a big mace, etc. I may just be rusty, but some of the chain attacks of the new enemies are extra annoying, lol.

A lot of these mods discussed require offline play. You are missing a HUGE component of these Soulsborne games offline, not to mention they are much harder if you cannot summon jolly co-op on bosses making the hard ones more managable. I highly recommend playing online with all the tips on the ground, other players helping, pvp, etc.

I tried multiplayer with my son and we both got our clocks cleaned lol. It's boring old singleplayer with an easy mode for me. 😁
I primarily play offline because the cheat/trainer advises me to do so, and I want to avoid PvP in my single-player experience. I don't play on PvP servers in MMOs, and I don't like the game forcing that nonsense on me while I'm having fun.

Same here - although most of the online experiences I had with ER were very positive - folks coming over to help with bosses, mainly.

The only RPG PvP I have ever really enjoyed was Guild Wars 2 Realm vs Realm vs Realm - so much fun and so well designed. The community (when I played it) was awesome - there was a website that kept track of battle results and it was a:genuinely friendly rivalry.

I'm going to get this game when you can get the GOTY edition with all content included for like $20. I loved/hated Dark Souls, but never played any after the first one because I feel like I have enough stress.

I never uninstalled Elden Ring, so I've been playing a bit here and there to not get completely rusty. Already bough the DLC, looking forward to it tomorrow... not looking forward to it probably breaking all the mods though, hehe.

I find these types of games really intriguing, as long as you have a "no rune loss on death" mod. If not, it just feels like I waste too much time, and play far too timidly.

*EDIT* Also honorable mention to the ultra wide screen mod, no black sidebars mod, etc.

At this point Souls-like games have become a religion. It's probably more accurate to describe it as a cult, such is the fervor on display. Even if they wanted to release an easy mode (not that I think that they do), From Software would get utterly crucified by the batshit fanatical fanbase were they even to mention it in passing. Luckily trainers do exist, though I suspect that the new expansion will break them until they get updated.

Trying not to spoil anything, which might be hard since I'm not getting it at release, but.. glad it's doing well! Have to imagine at least some of the reviewers were rusty when they jumped into the DLC, too, which could easily skew things. ER will kick your ass if you don't show mobs proper respect.

There's some pretty awesome mods for ER as well (like the much-loved Seamless Co-op), and that'd be a pretty good way for someone to experience the game who didn't want to struggle so much. It was an amazing experience and adventure the few playthroughs I used it - including with my GF, who doesn't play Souls games at all - without being interrupted by tedious PVP every five minutes.

Although I am not into soulslike games, I watched some reviews because this is after all a huge game release.

It is even more difficult than the main game... Which is great, if you are into this. To me, this is a huge warning sign "Do not buy or you will smash your keyboard and bite the mouse cable into pieces."

But I do not judge the fans, I understand that there is a great feeling of an achievement once you defeat a difficult boss. I got enough of kind of this in the real world, so I'll pass.
A trainer quite literally changes how the game plays. It's a way of saying, "No Fromsoft. I will play the game MY way, not your way."

After the great reviews so pumped to get back into this masterpiece, been missing Soulsborne games so much. Day 1 purchase. Online is gonna be packed with jolly cooperation too. Looks like it unlocks Thursday in most regions, says 6PM EST.

Lot of negativity below for no good reason, if you don't like this amazing genre why post? A game of this quality is the reason we celebrate this hobby. You're welcome to go play some other game where you can mindlessly push forward on the keeb/controller following your map markers until the credits.

Fired it back up a couple hours ago. I can't remember how to play. If the DLC is harder than the original game, I'm doomed.
