Out of the Blue

It was five years ago today that a .plan update by John Carmack (I didn't even know I still had a copy of that from the days before .plan trackers) revealed .plans to scrap the original Quake netcode and create QuakeWorld. While QW didn't turn out quite as originally conceived, as plans for things like a chat mode, global ranking, and banning of players at the Master Server level were eventually scrapped, it did turn out to be the way that a lot of folks finally got to have an enjoyable experience playing an online FPS without a broadband connection.

I know I've mentioned the original web-cam before, the one that was used by the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory to see if there was coffee in the coffee pot. Now the Historic Trojan Room coffee pot is up for auction on eBay (thanks Scott Thurston), your chance to own a piece of web history. Hey, and I need a coffee pot too -- too bad I already have a full supply of broken ones.

This is all crazy to me... ive seen the ad a few times, but no problems here
Win 98 SE with IE 5.5
Redhat 7.1 using KDE with Konquerer

amd 1.2 ghz thundabird 384 mb ram

Actually, I'm running Win98 and I get the same problem with this ad. I've never actually seen it, but whenever it comes up I get a big "missing plugin" type box that covers the first several news stories. I click it, and it just tries to get me to install flash, which I already have... dunno what the problem is.

I'm also puzzled why other's are still seeing this ad. I saw it for about a week or two when it first made its appearance and then it stopped through no actions of my own. Is it possible the browsers in question mabye have a cached version of the ad that's being played?

You gave up golf? After actually learning to play it? I didn't think that was possible. I suppose it might just be difficult and expensive enough in NY for that to happen but it's still amazing.

This is wierd since I've *never* seen this ad, not at work or home. I thought it had been discontinued until I saw people complaining last night. I visit this site at least twice a day and there's always the banner ad on top and an ad at left, but no pop-up. Strange. Guess I got lucky somehow, although after all the complaints, I *want* to see it.

Now if only that McDonald's ad on Gamespy would disappear...

Hey JCC, God knows where the floppy drive has gone but the new UltraSPARCs actually are no longer purple, just the usual, boring, eggshell white...
As for Mozilla: yep, I use it at home but for some reason it won't compile on our system here and the binary doesn't seem to work either. Besides, I don't have root access... :-( Thanks for your suggestions though.

#6 - I read Blues on Linux using both Netscape and Mozilla. I'd recommend using Mozilla for sites that use Flash, nd after some months I've never had any problems with it - give that a try or delete your Netscape profile /home/~username/.netscape but remember to back up your e-mails!

But one thing - why are Sun Solaris purple and wheres the damn floppy drive!

Well funny you should mention that - this stupid Flash ad is causing me grief too. I use Netscape 4.78 under Solaris, and I can't even view your page nowadays! (Instead I get an empty page with some some kind of HTTP error.) I have a Flash plugin for my browser, but I guess those advertising idiots assume everyone uses Windows.
Blue, I have emailed you about this, but you obviously chose to ignore it - could you please do something about this ad? If you can't get rid of it, could you at least try and ensure it won't screw up the whole site on platforms that aren't able to view it? I always thought you pride yourself on how many different browsers and operating systems your site can be viewed (which I think is very laudable, by the way).

A large, floating Flash ad that directly covers content and can't be closed until it's finished playing *is* obnoxious. It won't keep me from the site, but I will pass along to Blue and any others that such obtrusive advertising will *never* prompt me to buy or even investigate the product being advertised.

It's probably a U.S. ad, anyway, which is another problem with Internet advertising. The medium is global, not local.

Love your site, been coming here for many many years. I understand you need money and I have acually sent you some and bought a tshirt, BUT.... I will no longer be visiting here. I cant take the rediculous die hard ad anymore. I may not have the best machine, but it pretty much locks me down. It is the most rediclulous ad I hjave ever seen. I measn I cant even read the fucking news untill it closes. Sorry Blue, but you have lost ANOTHER reader.
