FYI: Civ 6 is 95% off in Steam ($2.99): I'll probably grab it.

It's funny. I have fond memories of OG WinCiv. I still fire it up once in a while (well done, devs, the game still works in Win10!). I think I played 3 but didn't like it. Never played any others.

I would still consider Civ3 the worst of the series (its expansion was the first to have multiplayer) but I've not put much time into 6 either. Civ6 just seemed too cartoony for me. Civ5 was better than 6 and I'm not a huge fan of it either. Civ4 is still the best of the bunch and the last game that used square zones instead of being hex based in 5/6. The only reason I have some of the Civ6 dlc is it was in humble bundles over the years.

I have yet to really find a good modern 4x game that I enjoy as much as Civ4, Sins of a Solar Empire, StarWars Empire at War or even GalCiv 2/3.

You're forgetting CivNet!

Personally, I've put hundreds of hours into Civ and Civ4, and we're into play again, would probably just load up 4
