Out of the Blue

I wanted to get the chance to rewatch Mad Max: Fury Road before going out to see Furiosa. But I haven't gotten around to that, and dawdling on the current movie is not a good idea, because it sounds like it's going to close right away. I'll work on changing plans, but I may end up waiting to see this at home despite myself if things don't work out. Speaking of which, we recently watched something amazing at home that I should have mentioned for equal time when slagging Atlas. Over the Memorial Day weekend we finally caught up with 1917. I was aware that this is all depicted as single running shot like Birdman, but I was still not prepared for such a stunning technical achievement. I definitely want to see the "making of" features for this film for a look at how Sam Mendes and company managed to accomplish what they did.

The movie was effectively shot in a single take. I say "effectively" because if you remember the scene in the small house by the river, the protagonist seemingly loses consciousness and the screen goes dark for an instant, giving an editor a chance to link up separate takes. I don't know if that happened, and even if it did, the amount of work that had to be done in order to shoot the film in this way is mind-boggling. To someone who appreciates the art of movie making like I do, it's awe-inspiring.
"The assumption that animals are without rights, and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance, is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality."
