Out of the Blue

I wanted to get the chance to rewatch Mad Max: Fury Road before going out to see Furiosa. But I haven't gotten around to that, and dawdling on the current movie is not a good idea, because it sounds like it's going to close right away. I'll work on changing plans, but I may end up waiting to see this at home despite myself if things don't work out. Speaking of which, we recently watched something amazing at home that I should have mentioned for equal time when slagging Atlas. Over the Memorial Day weekend we finally caught up with 1917. I was aware that this is all depicted as single running shot like Birdman, but I was still not prepared for such a stunning technical achievement. I definitely want to see the "making of" features for this film for a look at how Sam Mendes and company managed to accomplish what they did.

Mad Max works best as a small story that is tightly focused. It's great when it's a story about a man trying to survive the odds in a post-apocalyptic world. The setting gives the story room to add details that would otherwise not be probable in a modern setting. Fury Road, while absolutely gorgeous and fun to watch, wasn't a good Mad Max movie. The Interceptor is trashed in the first minutes of run time and then mostly disappears. That is as much of a character in the world as Max himself. Then Max becomes a subject rather than a protagonist to Furiosa (Furiosa is a great character and I think Theron did a wonderful job playing her) so he's a party member or NPC. Or, to put it another way, it'd be like a movie called "James T. Kirk: Rise of the Borg" but William Shatner is just an aged hologram who puts out quips from time to time or performs a minor function. I'll see Furiosa because it will eventually be available for home viewing, but I can't say that I ever wondered or cared about her backstory. George Miller may have planned out an epic wasteland trilogy but it really feels more like a dilution of Mad Max than an addition to it. Especially since it doesn't really slot anywhere in between the original trilogy comfortably or consistently.
