Out of the Blue

Well, it turned out I was wrong about not having any plans at all for what's Memorial Day weekend here in the US. It slipped my mind that MrsBlue and I have a date with friends this afternoon to stroll around near the Hudson River. This will be as low-key as it sounds, but it is indeed a plan, so there's that. Speaking of plans, I did get to rewatch Dune Part 1, which was even better than I remembered. This leaves me on track to watch the new one tonight, and my anticipation level is pretty extreme. Oh well, what better occasion to geek out than Geek Pride day. Now where's my towel?

Planned-out Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.

A bit long, even though they dropped out tons of stuff. This is the issue with trying to make Dune movies. But yeah, both movies are very good.

Dune pt. 2 was visually pretty good flick, but a bit long. 7/10 like pt. 1. Now, I feel like playing its RTS games. Not that boring adventure game. "The spice must flow." P

I finally got off my but and pointed the trailcam at the raven 'feeding' plank on my buddies second story terrace (as in walk the plank, it almost looks like it could hold my weight)
And bam, captured this one grabbing a meatball in between dive bombing dinner guests.
Make sure to click on the sound to hear him coming in for the landing, stomping around, and cracking the peanut shell., etc...

Oh look, a peanut! https://imgur.com/kRH6tKy
The trailcam triggers just by the wind moving the board - even when set to LOW sensitivity, so there was a lot of empty videos I had to scroll through. Luckily it was also snapping a pic at the same time so all I had to do to find the money shot was scroll through page after page of videos and occasionally open a jpeg looking for a missing meatball - and then scroll back up.
sorry about the crap quality, I could not upload 70 mb in imgur.com's 60 second time-window, so I had to shrink them. Crap internet out where I house sit

“The sea is a very boring place for an animal,” said de Stephanis. “Imagine if you’re a dog or some other mammal, you can interact with objects around you. But in the sea there’s not much for the orcas to interact with, so they play with the rudders.”

Why can't people (not just scientists) just say "we don't know yet"? Oh that's right, there is a tourist industy losing money. Our species will just make any shit up to be able to skip the thinking part and just go straight to the violence if money is at stake. Every time.

Its a specific area year round, the amount just goes up with amount of visitors to the area. I could just as easily say the boats disturb the hunting grounds and the orcas are just trying to get the boats out because it costs them hunting opportunities when boats are there. I mean, they don't attack people in the water. So maybe what we should be doing is staying the fuck out of those areas just like african safaris only go to certain spots because if you go to certain areas the animals get very agitated and their behavior gets unpredictable.

Whales are seriously smart, we all know this by now, and they absolutely could be doing it as entertainment. By choosing this theory however...and framing it like that publicly with basically zero evidence other then a lack of evidence for anything else currently, this group of scientists has now opened the door to violence towards the whales as a deterrent because the tourist industry will label them a threat to people in general. They will point to this theory and say "scientists said" just like this article does. This dude took what an average human's view of the open ocean is (a lot of water, not much else) and used it to make his theory seem more believable. We have zero proof that this is a killer whale's perspective on the open ocean other then as humans we could understand it if it was. WUT? That's about as scientific as an episode of Supernatural. It does give the tourist industry and governement something to ward off the backlash that will undoubtedly come from violence towards one of the public's favorite species while they get their tourist area boat safe again though. Isn't that convenient.
