Gabe initially left Microsoft in 1996 and used his money from there to start Valve. It would be a interesting 'ending' to the story but I don't see it happening.

I don't know if Microsoft buying Valve is a real story or a persistent internet rumor. I also have no idea if $16b is a reasonable offer or a low ball bid. Since Valve is a private company it is a bit hard to know. That said, I would think even people who believe Valve is treating game makers unfairly would balk at the idea of MS taking over. Hard to see how MS buying Valve is good for any beside MS and Gabe.

This is just rumor. Oh MS might actually want to buy it, but Gabe would never sell (he's worth $2 billion so he doesn't need the money).

Eh? Latest numbers if you google it put Newell's net worth north of $4 billion.

And once more: This crap is not even a rumor. It is just plain unadulterated grade A+ BULLSHIT.

The guy who posted this on X (Dior) is a Counter-Strike streamer with absolutely zero credentials as far as any insider information is concerned. He has an established track record of exactly ZILCH when it comes to leaks. He is just a clown and a troll who got his 15 minutes of fame because the entire gaming/tech press failed to do their due diligence.

Again: The $16bn figure alone should have been a dead giveaway that this story is fabricated bogus. Valve is easily "worth" north of $100 billion. You just need to compare the Actiblizz valuation to a potential Valve takeover valuation and you know immediately that $16bn is so far below any realistic takeover price that it is not even funny. M$ would barely get the kitchen and the bathroom (but only without Gabe's generously sized shitter) of Valve for $16bn. Not a single thing more.

P.S.: All of this reminds me of a story a few years ago that originated from a forums post on the German 3D Center forums (a known AMD fanboi cesspit) where a guy claimed to be an AMD employee with insider knowledge. I don't remember the exact details of the story but the story made it from 3D Center all around the world to major tech sites because they all just copied and pasted from each other with zero fact or source checking. The guy who started the rumor was no AMD employee but simply an AMD fanboy troll and what he claimed turned out to be completely false (IIRC, it was something ludicrous like nVidia supposedly cancelled Pascal or something like that).

Has Newell ever stated that he wouldn't sell? I've never heard a single person say "I'm rich enough and don't want/need anymore money," billionaire or otherwise.
This argument has been mentioned more than once in this thread and it doesn't hold water.

"Plus, as the article points out, it's a privately held company, and Gabe only owns 25%, with a lot of it owned by employees through stock options."
If that is true it means there could be 75% of the company that would like to cash out and do something different.

"Gabe and the employees would have zero reason to sell"
My guess is the majority would love to cash out.

and everyone working there would know that MS would destroy their comfortable little realm, and would want to impose their corporate social structure: eg: No more nerf gun battles in the break room.
And that would be a bad thing how? Maybe Half Life 3 could actually get made if they weren't goofing off.

With estimated revenues of $10 billion a year, and the company probably worth a lot more than $16 billion in reality, Gabe and the employees would have zero reason to sell, and everyone working there would know that MS would destroy their comfortable little realm, and would want to impose their corporate social structure: eg: No more nerf gun battles in the break room.

Nah, I can't see it happening.

Microsoft's financial resources are vast and often not fully grasped by the public. The company's recent strategy involving NewsCorp is a prime example. To avoid a costly and uncertain legal battle, Microsoft proposed a mutually advantageous agreement to NewsCorp. This arrangement allowed Microsoft to legally utilize NewsCorp's intellectual property for the development and distribution of their AI products and services, effectively circumventing the need for judicial decisions or the possibility of regulatory scrutiny.

It's hardly unexpected that Microsoft is showing interest in the leading online game distribution platform. It's likely that they will pursue similar agreements to secure their objectives, favoring strategic partnerships over direct acquisitions for their business expansion.

I guess it is. Gabe is not a "how much money can we make each quarter" suit, he actually cares about gaming and invests into projects that will VERY likely lose money just to see it if works out nevertheless. With Microsoft, that would not happen and immediately all the work on Linux/SteamOS/Proton would get stopped the very first minute after M$ had taken over.

That's why I will never be 100% certain about anything not happening in the games industry no matter how dumb it sounds. In the past 5 to 10 years I have said "they did WHAT?!?" more times than I can count.

Ever since Activision laid off 800 employees in their best fiscal year ever up until that point AND had enough money to give their CEO a $200 million bonus (!!!!) the same year, there's nothing whatsoever that I will consider an absolute impossibility no matter how ridiculous it might sound.

GabeN is already a billionaire. I can't see Valve entertaining this. I can't see the Justice Department permitting it. The Actiblizz acquisition is one thing, but Valve is absolutely dominant.

Nonsense. We all know that Valve will, of course, be bought by Sony which will then make Steam Playstation exclusive and mandatory linked to a Playstation account.
That would entail one heckuva lot of review bombs.

I don't even know what the hell you are talking about. There is no rumor here. The origin of this fake bullshit story is a troll post by a random John Doe on X. There is no rumor. If I go on X now and post "The U.S. is planning to declare the nuclear extinction of China" and the press picks it up with zero source/fact checking by calling it a "rumor" then that is the very definition of insanity.

For something to qualify as a "rumor", you would need a minimum basis of potential plausibility. There was never any plausibility whatsoever to the troll post that triggered the dumbasses of the so called gaming "press". They collectively completely failed to do their job, i.e. fact/source checking etc. which is the very basic bare minimum responsibilities of anyone who wants to call themselves a "journalist".
