Mr. Tact wrote on May 15, 2024, 14:26:
Dune prequel could be great, could be terrible, only time will tell. I hope it is great.

Three problems I have with the series.

1. Not based on anything authored by Frank Herbert. The films are excellent, partly due to Denis Villeneuve's brilliant direction but primarily because they are based on a book written by a master storyteller. It has an established foundation. You can see the difference in source material between authors and TV writers by comparing the seasons of Game of Thrones that were authored by George R.R. Martin and the final seasons that were not.

2. Lore can be butchered, as the writers can do whatever they want and excuse away lore problems with "it takes place 10K years before Paul Atreides." We've seen how well that works for Rings of Power.

3 This is an HBO series meaning it is likely to feature excessive amounts of soft porn and violence, making it entirely inaccessible for younger fans of the Dune books and films who would like to watch. HBO cannot help themselves but add that stuff for the "shock and awe," or because they feel that's what viewers want since GOT was so popular or because "HBO reasons." A series can do very well with a mature theme without the R and X-rated elements.

It’s more likely Boeing is a „too big to fail“ thing. They are getting demolished by Airbus and having some sort of scandal would hurt their global standing. And the US probably didn’t want to be the direct cause.

They know that if normal people sue them they can just settle out of court or bully them into being quiet. Or pull some suicide cover ups. If the government actually went after them? Then they would be trouble they could not get out of.

And yeah it sucks. Boeing is a trash company in my eyes now.

It looks good.

Heh. I must say, though, if they have been guiding things for 10,000 years before that violent chaos in Dune started, they aren't doing a very good job. It's interesting that the preview shows some of the internal dysfunction inside the Bene Gesserit. That might explain things.

i'll be a little shocked if it's better than psychic tits'n ass galore. hbo does not have a good track record of eschewing cheap payoffs for the sake of subtle and complex writing.

Good cast on the whole. Mark Strong and Emily Watson are a good sign...hopefully.

I think standing and clapping for more than 30 seconds is meaningless and becomes pretentious. That's just my opinion though.

After secret negotiations, the government agreed not to prosecute Boeing on a charge of defrauding the United States by deceiving regulators about the flight system. The settlement included a $243.6 million fine, a $500 million fund for victim compensation, and nearly $1.8 billion to airlines whose Max jets were grounded for nearly two years.

Un-fucking-real! Why are they even called the "Justice" Department? Man, does that ever piss me off when I see this sort of shit. I remember an article in Rolling Stone 20 years, or whatever, back about the injustice of the three strikes law. One guy, poor white trash in the south, got popped the first time for having two joints on him, then a few years later with a few ounces of pot, and the last one? Shoplifted a Snickers bar. Life in prison for that. It was eventually overturned but the poor guy served something like 12 years for a bit of weed and a chocolate bar. Meanwhile these motherfuckers murder hundreds all for a buck and they get to walk between the raindrops and carry on with nothing more than a fucking fine. How is it even legal for "secret" negotiations to permit this sort of shit? What's the fucking point of a Justice Department in that case? If I were a relative of one of those killed I'd be personally going after the Boeing execs responsible to make them pay in kind. No amount of money would assuage my anger in a case like this.
