New DOOM Trademark Spied

A Trademark Registration filed in January on behalf of ZeniMax Media seeks trademark protection for IDKFA, famously the cheat code for the original DOOM (thanks Agent Strange via Clawsomegamer). KFA stands for keys, firearms, armor, as this fills your inventory with all you can hold, though for some of us the reminder is that it helps you to KFA that stands in your path. There's no clear indication what sort of game one would base on a cheat code that only a fraction of current gamers have used, but there's speculation that a DOOM announcement will come during next month's Xbox showcase. The description from the application is just the usual semi-helpful word salad:
Entertainment services, namely, providing on-line computer games; entertainment services, namely, providing temporary use of non-downloadable computer games; production of music; entertainment services in the nature of recording, production and post-production services in the field of music; entertainment services, namely, providing non-downloadable prerecorded music via a website; provision of information relating to electronic computer games, television programs and movies provided via the internet; non-downloadable electronic publications in the nature of magazines, newsletters, and blogs in the field of video games, television programs and movies; production, provision and distribution of television programs and movies; providing non-downloadable television programs and movies via the internet and video-on-demand transmission services

It's funny to see how divisive this debate is getting, as well. You have players who shit on Doom 2016 as being simplistic and boring and 2 EZ, and then you have those of us who want Doom to be a straight run n gun, and avoid heavy Rock Paper Scissors strategizing mid-fight the way Eternal did it. The heavy use of staggers devolved Eternal into a series of "shoot to stage enemy animation into 'keeled over' stage, then perform finisher" over and over. It seems like players who enjoy Souls-series and metroidvania platformers love Eternal, and they view Doom 2016 as simply lacking challenge, and if a game lacks challenge, then it sucks.
I like both but heavily prefer 2016. But OG or Doom 2 is still best.
Perfectly stated. Doom 2016 was a blast, but I couldn't play more than a couple levels of Eternal. The constant "Rock Paper Scissors strategizing", as you put it, completely turned me off. It's been awhile now, perhaps I should see if there's a mod to remove/change that nonsense, I would like to play it.

Original Doom + Brutal Mod is all I need. The solid gameplay of the first game and the over-the-top gore of the mod keep the game fun even thirty years on (but skip the mod's campaign mode)

Doom 3 was fine, but it wasn't Doom. It was atmospheric survival horror (if a bit heavy on monster closets) and I enjoyed it most after the first game, but it feels the least Doomy of the bunch. Even the DoomRPG felt more in tune with the game's style than Doom 3.

I didn't hate the new Dooms but I don't love them either. The push-forward and pinata enemy mechanics just don't jibe with my preferred game-style. I mostly played the games for (of all things!) the story. Although that end-boss in the expansion pack can DIAF.

Still a blast start to finish

For sure. Enjoyed Eternal a lot too, but I recall after my first campaign run was all over I felt like I was both mentally and physically exhausted from that roller coaster ride.

The new Doom games were hit and miss for me. I had some fun with the 2016 one but found Eternal a bit too much arena based in that they took what they did with Doom and really leaned into it for the entire sequel.

Oddly enough, I never played the original Doom games much. I gave them a go, but never had been "addicted" to really play through them. I found that at some point I much have purchased Doom 2 remastered and it was sitting on my Steam account. I installed it in March and with the improvements they made, I went all in. I had a blast. Ended up beating it and was only disappointed by the lack of achievements, but at least I got to see what it was all about. This prompt me to purchase Doom 64 which I had a lot of fun with but ironically, the old Doom 2 sprites on PC have better animation than the Doom 64 graphics. The only thing better really was that the images are flat and detailed in Doom 64, but the overall animation was still better in Doom 2. Ended up beating that too and thought, what next? Let's try Final Doom! Well, the lack of Doom 2's remaster quality did make it a tad too old school for me. I hope they could give those the remaster treatment sometime, but I doubt they will.

What I hated about the new Doom games after Doom 3 was that you are forced to keep enemies alive because you would need to have them spawn health, armor or ammo later. What kind of Doom shooter needs you to keep demons alive? And as has already been said, the simple corridor-arena map design really sucked as well...

While Quake is my favorite id Software I really can't hate on any Doom game, I played and enjoyed all of them, even the new directions they took with Doom 3 and Doom 2016 I enjoyed a lot. The parkhour stuff in Eternal was kinda meh as was the neon interface, but I still found it to be a fun and well made (and extremely performant as a Vulkan/id Tech showcase).

If its only going to be the same new style game play, then they can keep it. Doom 3 took a lot of shit from many. but I really liked the story and game play of D3.

Id rather they go back to that style of game play then this new Arcady crap they have now.

Man i loved doom 3, Doom (2016) was ok.. but I didnt' love the rocket arena style they had where you jumped around parkour in an arena then go corridor then arena and repeat. I didn't end up playing Doom Eternal because of it.
