Out of the Blue

Quentin Tarantino's Final Film Won't Be 'The Movie Critic'; Pic Scrapped. Not sure why he's arbitrarily sticking to limiting his work to 10 films in the first place, especially since he's already directed 11 (sorry Quentin, there were two Kill Bill movies). But I certainly understand why he might not want his final film to be one to piss off the film critics who will be responsible for ongoing reevaluations of his work going forward. That's just prudence.

Prudent Round-up

Red Lobster filed for Chapter 11 protection on Sunday.

Is it too late to load her up with debt and set her ablaze? Asking for a friend.

Not exactly. It was originally both written and filmed as a single movie, but the production company (Weinstein) pressured him to either shorten it or split it into two. He went with splitting it so he wouldn't have to cut out so much.

So while yes, it was released as two movies, that wasn't the original plan/intent. As such, I've also always considered them a single film, and at least from Tarantino's perspective as writer/director, this definitely makes sense.
I'm pretty sure I paid two admissions along the way. So at least from my perspective as an audience member... well, you get it.
Fair enough. Thumbsup

It's cheaper than some sea food joints, but is a bit expensive for what you get, because it's certainly not high class. Red Lobster was always low quality, and if you're in the mood for good sea food, you're better off going almost anywhere else.

I haven't been there in over a decade because it's just not worth it, and the only times I ever even considered it was when they were having their all-you-can-eat specials. Although with the recent bankruptcy rumors, I'm sure that's going away, if not the chain entirely.

It was the first time I'd ever seen it.

Because it was for a Canadian TV channel.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least. Studios are all too happy to sell a movie on trailers that are completely unrepresentative of what the movie actually is. Shit should be illegal.

A civil war fantasy movie, where you don't even know why there are opposing sides IMO by default sucks. I don't have to watch it to know it's going to be an overblown affair with no substance. What makes good war movies, good war movies? The stakes. We know what's at stake, and then we as the audience are invested in our protagonists, whether the stakes are worth it (as for example in WW2 movies) or perhaps not (Vietnam war).

Even fantasy\sci-fi "wars" need clearly defined sides in order to set the stage. Imagine watching Star Wars and never finding out why the Rebels are fighting the Empire? In that film, it's inherently obvious, but imagine if the characters were written without that exposition in mind.

As for Tarantino, good on him. He probably figured out that it's simply not going to be a great film.

if you're not trolling, i will say that films stinks to me of backdoor republican insurrection porn. the 20%ish furthest right of them practically fetishize rising up with their stupid 2nd amendment delusions to overthrow the government. i will not watch a film that depicts this country tearing itself apart; it's not a conversation we need to have anymore than we need a 'conversation' about vaccine efficacy.
Not trolling. The film is good. (CinemaScore B minus)

It's not about left or right, you literally can't tell who is conservative or liberal. Also it's not pushing an agenda one way or the other, except that war sucks.
The film even has Texas and California teaming up.

Yeah, beta males always want to fight when you move on their girls, they take it personal.

I'd like to see him go back to simpler and tighter like Reservoir Dogs - still his best work. The rest of his stuff has been a mixed bag for me. Yes to Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, and OUATIH. No to the rest.

That Red Lobster article is paywalled for me. While I've seen them around forever I've never actually been to one.

Yeah, I can't imagine the crew is all that keen on flying anything Boeing right now. I'd be bowing out.

Enormous sea reptile? We're gonna' need a bigger boat. The creatures in the oceans of the dinosaur eras were far more terrifying than any of the terrestrial lizards that existed. The plesiosaurus has always been my fave dino.

That was a really impressive jump from that cat.
