Into the Black

Last Link of the Day: Brian Cox: Joaquin Phoenix was terrible in Napoleon and I would have played it better. Thanks Dark Horizons. He's not wrong. He would have been better even if he kept his Scottish accent.

He is not wrong. Joaquin on paper seemed like a great choice for Napoleon, but he played him terribly. No one would have followed Joaquin Phoenix's Napoleon into battle, let alone all the wars that Napoleon fought in his life.

The Thinker is really impressive up close and personal - and it was way bigger than I imagined. Still, the most impressive thing of his there are the Gates of Hell. They're huge, and the detail and imagination that went into them is pretty mind boggling.

On a separate note, I love Brian Cox. He's a bit out there at times but he just says whatever he thinks without giving a shit about what anyone else thinks. I like grumpy old actors - they just lose their filter and say whatever.

This is another case of the trailer selling a movie that didn't exist. If you make a trailer that is 90% battle scenes and emperor court intrigue and 10% of his personal relationship, then release a movie that is the exact opposite ratio, how in the world can that be considered anything other than dishonest marketing? I hate that shit. If you have to deceive people to get them to watch your movie then you probably shouldn't have made the movie in the first place, or made one that costs way less. That's my take anyway. For what it was, I thought the movie was pretty good, but like everyone else I was disappointed with how much relationship drama was stuffed into what was sold to me as an historical epic.

If I could own just one reproduction of a statue, it would be Rodin's "Fallen Caryatid".

There was way too much focus on him and Josephine and their pervy little marriage. Yeah, it wasn't terrible or anything but it was pretty underwhelming for one of history's greatest conquerors. I didn't have enough time to see his tomb when I was in Paris but it's right across the street from the Rodin Museum - where I did go, and everyone should go if they're a fan of him or sculpture, and it has some nice paintings by Van Gogh and many others. The Hotel Invalides is a beautiful building.

i hated how the movie reduced huge campaigns to a small battle. and got some detail wrong...
