Out of the Blue

Today is Jackie Robinson Day, a celebration of the inspirational player who broke Major League Baseball's color line on this date in 1947, kicking off the sport's long-overdue reintegration. He ended up being rookie of the year, going on to be an MVP, a six-time all-star, and a world series champion, all while being subjected to vicious racism. So, like the "Great Question," the answer is the number 42, as all players on all teams will today wear Jackie's uniform number, which is otherwise retired across the sport in his honor.

It's also Tax Day here in the US. This is supposed to be April 15th, but rarely is lately. For various reasons the last time the annual deadline for tax filing actually fell on the 15th was in 2020, and six our of the last 10 deadlines were pushed out to the 17th or 18th. So hopefully this isn't catching anyone off-guard.

Integral Round-up

Bodolza: 5 seconds to max temp on the CPU means something is very wrong, even under a full load test like Prime95. Are you sure you didn't leave the cellophane on the cooler block? I've done that once by accident. The PC actually worked fine under normal loads but hit max temp immediately under stress testing.

Modern air coolers are pretty efficient. 90% of the time it's the case that's the problem. My last 6 builds have all been with air coolers and "airflow" style cases, with a mesh front panel instead of a "prettier" blank front panel with limited air intake area around the edges.

Positive air pressure is your friend. Worry less about exhaust fans. One fan in the back can do the job. What you want is a lot of intake air. The air will find it's way out on it's own, but you want to draw in as much air as possible.

I've never built a PC using an AIO liquid cooler (I certainly never want to do DIY water cooling). If someone asks me to build a PC with an AIO cooler someday, I'll try it. I'm not against AIOs, I just don't think they're necessary and needlessly add complexity and more failure points, as well as expense.

I already know my next upgrade is going to be a better cooler. It literally takes about 5 seconds for the CPU to start thermal throttling when I max it out. Current performance is more than enough for my needs, though, so it'll probably be a while before I go water cooled.

All the rest I'm reusing. Total will end up a bit under $2000. I'm hoping I won't need any upgrades for a good 3-5 years.
Congrats!

My last full upgrade was in 2018, which wasn't with top-of-the-line parts outside of the 1080 Ti at the time. I think our new machines will be good for about 8, perhaps 9, with some upgrades. We'll likely start to notice performance issues around year 5; maybe 6. But we should be able to get a minimum of 4K60 for a good long while.

So the Climate Change story.....

Speaking of climate change, we've just had our first major storm of the year. No power for 2 days, and internet just got restored last night. Storms this powerful causing city-wide power outages used to be extremely rare, but now it's 2-3 per year. I began to look into a whole home generator, but we sort of got a break last year. While we still had storms, we didn't lose power because I guess the previous years of storms had knocked all of the weak trees and branches down, so I kind of stopped looking. Now I'm looking at options again.

Cheers to you Mr Robinson. And while I am at it, cheers to Chadwick Bowman. Fantastic actor.

That's because climate crisis is all over the place. It's not nice and neat and gift wrapped in a beautiful little package made by an origami expert. It's more like the Natalie Cole song, Wild Women Do, except in this case they do regret it. It's about extremes in weather. The only people who enjoy that are those X athletes who like everything extreme.

Chadwick Boseman did a great job with that Jackie R biopic. He was a really good actor. Died way too soon. It's weird that I find baseball about as interesting as watching paint dry but most baseball movies are pretty damn good - 42, Major League (it is to baseball what Slapshot is to hockey, still one of the funniest movies ever), Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, The Natural, Moneyball, A League of Their Own, Eight Men Out, Bang the Drum Slowly, etc.

I never doubted the Romans had good wine. They were all about the luxuries in life. And most of the places they occupied had perfect terroir for producing great wine. I know in Rome itself they drank a lot of Primativo, which is one of my fave my wines as well, and I drink it regularly. And I imagine just like society today you had your plonk on the bottom end for the masses and your equivalent top-shelf Bordeaux's for the elites. I always wonder how widespread and in regular use beer was back then. Seeing as everyone drank it in Egypt and they were part of the Roman Empire you'd think it would have been popular among the rank and file of the Empire as it is with working Joes today.

Lulz @ both the Chase Bank and Penny Arcade today.
