Out of the Blue

I caught up with the first couple of episodes of the Fallout show last night, and it indeed looks as S.P.E.C.I.A.L. as the early reviews imply. I come away with a couple of meta thoughts on this. First, I'm amused by all the talk about how video games will now be the new source of Hollywood greatness. They are not a magic bullet, just like comic books weren't. The early MCU succeeded thanks to great movies, comic books didn't cause them to be great. The more recent MCU is a disappointment because the movies aren't as good. But the source material hasn't changed. Likewise, movies like Rampage and the first Super Mario Brothers sucked because they were terrible, not because they were adapted from games. And the Fallout show is great because it is extremely well-made. If you had Uwe Boll direct it would be hot garbage, and if you had Jonathan Nolan write House of the Dead it would probably be brilliant. Second, Amazon should probably rethink their ads for subscribers deal, but even if it persists, they need to refine the messaging. Saying this program is brought to you interruption-free 'thanks to the following commercials' is ridiculous. It's like those "as seen on TV" ads that promise to double your order "for free" as long as you "pay an extra charge."

Charged-up Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.

I wouldn't say piracy was beaten, because, well, creative liberation is the moral side of the line, and good will always triumph. I'm going to avoid a deep dive into the complexities of human expression and progress, and the evils of profiteering collectives, etc. etc., and societal indoctrination yada yada, but yeah. Life is complex, and everyone gets to figure it out on their own.

I do want to point out that I did not utilize a torrent, I simply use torrent search engines as an easy means of seeing what's been freed from the corpos. (I use older technologies from the old man GreyWeb)

For anyone that does use torrents though, remember your VPNs!

On the subject of the TV show 'Fallout' I just watched episode 2. A really good episode. I liked it even better than the first. More exploration of the characters, great settings, and a fun and slick action scene. The ghoul is my favorite character in the show right now. He rocks.

That brings up a point that I have been marvelling at for a while now. The creative industries had piracy beaten. They stopped worrying about the nominal amount of piracy that has existed, does exist, and will continue to exist until the heat death of the universe and instead started competing with the idea that the best version of something was always the free one. People would pay for things like Spotify, Netflix, and games on Steam. People didn't just suddenly forget how torrents work; you gave them a better option to free. It was proven that it can be done. And now we're right back to the best experience often being obtained by downloading the free version on a torrent site. More proof that history is cyclical because lessons last a decade or two at most, then we regress back to acting like a better way wasn't already discovered.

The Romans were absolutely brutal to slaves that revolted. Just read about the Spartacus revolt and aftermath.

precisely why i cancelled my prime sub after having it on continuously since prime was introduced. they already raise the price every year; now they want to force me to watch ads, or pay ANOTHER $3/mo to go ad free? nah, there's only so much stupidity and hypocrisy i can take. if they're gonna go tiered prime video, they should offer the option of turning it off completely for -$3/mo as well. i'd take that over their naked greed.

Wow, the Pompeii find is impressive.

But if the grand property's ceiling fresco can be described as exquisite, some of what's being learned about the bakery speaks to an altogether more brutal aspect of Roman life - slavery.

It's obvious the people who worked in the business were kept locked away in appalling conditions, living side by side with the donkeys that turned the millstones. It seems there was one window and it had iron bars to prevent escape.

Poor donkeys. Slavery has always perplexed me. Generally there are way more slaves than masters in any given scenario. Why there weren't uprisings or murders of owners at every turn boggles my mind. Maybe there was and it was just never recorded so future slaves didn't get any ideas. Of course now we have perfected slavery. The best slave is always the one who believes himself to be free.

That eclipse story is so sad. Some poor 9-year-old lost their entire family, and nearly their own life over some conspiracy theory nonsense.

I try to avoid the horribleness of stories like these, but I feel compelled to point this out. This story is not the natural culmination of believing in conspiracy theories. This story illustrates what a severely mentally disturbed person could feel compelled to do if exposed to such conspiracy theories.

I feel this is important because when you say, for example, "Elon Musk deserves to die - he is causing suffering to many marginalized groups and is destroying the planet" or something similar to it that is equally possible to unintentionally help convince someone extremely mentally disturbed should also do something awful. I won't hold you responsible if (dog forbid) that happens, but please take note of the glass house you might be living in.

EDIT: I need to remember to add a disclaimer when I quote someone. I am not responding to anyone in particular (NKD just happened to mention something that I wanted to make a point about. NKD is a very rational and intelligent poster and likely what I am saying doesn't apply to them whatsoever)

solar eclipse would be the “epitome of spiritual warfare”.

Yeah good warfare there. Totally happened. You stupid dumbass human being. Your little stabbing and throwing your two children from your car then killing yourself in the crash resulted in nothing. Nothing at all. a traumatized 8 year old, a dead eight month old and a dead live in partner. What an absolute sack of shit.

Posting under the name “Ayoka”, the astrology influencer had over 100,000 followers and often reposted conspiracy theories and antisemitic-filled rhetoric on her page.

Yup, sack of shit confirmed.

Also, I think Nolan just knocked it out of the park. As Blue mentions the entire thing could have easily been a shit show if directed by somebody else.
Rimmer: “Step up to Red Alert.”

My sister pays for an Amazon Prime account. When I asked her to borrow her laptop and watch Fallout she had no idea that movies were included. She has only ever wanted the fast shipping. Now, I am watching all of the movies and shows, all the while I am taking advantage of the free one day shipping, so two separate people are reaping all of the benefits while paying only once. Doesn't that just make you mad? Too bad.
