I looked through their video library to decide if I wanted to add them to my Patreon (I do contribute to a lot of creators), but honestly, except for the L4D2 retrospective, there wasn't anything I was interested in.

Their videos are very polished. I wish them well, but I have others I watch regularly that I'd rather support.

Yeah that is annoying. It's why I don't think the demand for the movie theater experience will ever completely dry up. At least in the theater there is an expectation of a minimum standard of silence and attention. You're not washing the dishes or trying to discuss when you are going to get your taxes done in the theater. Also, you can't pause the movie and get distracted - the movie playing on screen doesn't wait for you.

I'm not a creator, so I don't have access to analytics, but this sure feels accurate. I've heard that basically stated by creators in one form or another. Still, and I know that it isn't even close to the majority, but I routinely watch 2 and 3 hour movie or TV show reviews. The reviews are often longer than the movie. I think my record is watching a seven and a half hour video about a recent "Dr Who" season.

I mean you can see the final state of the inverse of this in Youtube Shorts and TikToks being so successful: Utterly contentless and disgustingly badly produced short form videos that are used entirely for something your finger and your eyes get to keep busy with while your brain is turned off. The equivalent of taking a deep breath and just sitting on the couch staring out of the window for a few minutes.

And yet it's disgustingly successful, raking in crazy amounts of cash and allowing for product shilling on a whole new level and hence being largely influenced by massive marketing studios.

And hence on the flipside, the longer, the more in-depth and the more "content heavy" your video is, the less someone is willing to watch it and the less the market is willing to invest money into it, both sponsors and youtube themselves.

But really I wanted to second appreciation for Mortisamal Gaming. He does 100% every game he reviews - how he still manages to get videos out amazes me.

I feel like this can't be sustainable. He probably plays games all day (while recording) and then does videos at night, and doesn't sleep. Or sleeps every other day. In any case, I hope he doesn't crash and takes things a bit easier, 'cos I like his content. You don't have to put out videos every day to have a successful channel. I mean if it ends up costing you your health it's not worth it.

Well, their Patreon membership went up +300% from the figure shown in the video (401 members). Currently they are at 1655 Patreon members. Though those figures could be misleading, and even if they aren't, it really isn't enough to support 4 full-time people.

99% of my Yewtewb viewing is edumacational - documnetaries, travelogs, etc. Most of those are generally an hour or more. I also look at a lot of real estate in Europe - Italy and France in particular. The deals in Europe are fucking mind boggling cheap compared to here! Lately I've been watching a ton of NHK Japan - their PBS. They have this series called
Japanology
which is all about things unique or done the Japanese way. It's really neat and quite edifying. I really need to go Japan.

Anything over 20-30min is basically suicide on YouTube unfortunately. You'll put in 10 times the work to make 1/10th the money, and quality is very under-rewarded by YouTube viewers.

I wasn't flippant, just being matter of fact. Something can be awesome but in a crowded field, there is no guarantee of long term viability.

it seems like youtube can support small content creators but not teams. for instance I like morismal gaming. he puts out a daily video 6 days a week. His thing is to 100% games. He just hit 300 k subs with 1400 videos. most of his videos are < 10 minutes but the 100%/reviews are much longer. GVMers for contrast has 534k subs, have created 144 videos, have to support 4 people. They do tend to be fairly lengthy and quality but... not sure how well and popular that format is. To answer your final question, I do. I have probably spent a thousand hours watching retrospectives. But really I wanted to second appreciation for Mortisamal Gaming. He does 100% every game he reviews - how he still manages to get videos out amazes me.

Meh. They don't do anything that a hundred other channels don't already do. Nothing lasts forever. That's life.

A little more flippant than how I wanted to come across, but ultimately I agree with your sentiment. They stand out to me because they are less cringey than many creators who do the same thing, as well as separating actual facts from emotion and personal bias. Imo they were unlike a lot of those similar channels doing the same thing. Ironically that because they don't do the cringey stuff is probably a big reason that they are failing. That is just how it works unfortunately.

At some point they used the words "we no longer have the money to make anymore videos". That's not hard to believe given the stark realities of YouTube today. I take that to mean their existence is basically over. If they get enough in Patreon bucks to make one more video, ultimately nothing will change as that isn't really a long-term, sustainable business model and we will be right back here soon. If they manage to stick around, however, that would be cool. They do good work.
