Out of the Blue

We had a shakeup at the BlueTower this morning, literally, as we experienced a small earthquake. Every region has its own weather issues to deal with, as yesterday's snowy nor'easter reminded us, but earthquakes are rarely on the menu here. Unlike places like Taiwan which just suffered a major quake, there aren't the kind of fault lines around here for that level of catastrophe. Our quake reportedly registered 4.8 on the Richter scale, but the epicenter near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey is probably around a hundred miles from here, so we got even less of it than that. But as I say, this is still so unusual that it inspired concerned phone calls and messages, even though I expect it wouldn't have even awakened a Southern Californian from a light nap.

I am a New Englander myself. I too have been enjoying the rest of the country laughing at us. People up here need to stop taking everything so damn seriously. I really don't want them to change - I love the way they are, but maybe lighten up a bit?

If you are a New Englander and don't find that even slightly funny, that is a clear sign that you need some attitude adjustment. I'll even help you get started:

Step 1 of this self-improvement process is removing the large, solid object from your ass. Ensuing steps will not work until this is completed successfully. Initially extraction could be quite uncomfortable but trust me it's worth it. You probably won't walk as funny anymore either.

Haha that reminds me of the first tornado warning I lived through back in 2000 when I had just moved to Memphis. The tornado siren was blaring only a few blocks away. Some guy was saying something over a loudspeaker. My wife's phone was giving that emergency tone warning announcing impending doom for everyone. I was so damn tired from a 14-hour shift I just rolled over and fell back to sleep. Turns out the tornado (an F-3 I think) passed about a quarter mile from my house.

I'm not sure what to make of that factoid. Either Japan has a huge number of significant earthquakes, or you are a herald of doom bringing destruction wherever you go.
It's the latter. I lived in Japan for 2 years and have made about 6 other visits. Still haven't experienced an earthquake there. But I've felt two in the US, both very minor.

Well then I know who I'm not inviting to my next party, shindig, hootenanny, or bible study. I mean, I don't ever have any of those, but if I did...

Been through earthquakes, a massive fire, floods, hurricanes, and two blizzards. The only thing missing on my disaster bingo card is a volcanic eruption and a mass avalanche. Maybe one day I'll be able to zero the card out. I'll never understand the fear/panic response. Like that ever helps a situation.

I just wrapped up watching The Antisocial Network. It's streaming on Netflix currently. It was an interesting look at the beginning of 4chan and how all the shit that was originally "for teh lulz" was suborned by even less intelligent morons in to allegedly "real" events, like the Q nonsense.

Yeah, I was in SF in the early 90s when a bigger one hit. Hands down the single most terrifying experience there is. Just primal unreasoning fear. Experiencing something like that and you can understand why our ancestors would have attributed those sorts of events to an angry god and been anxious to appease them.

Lived in Jersey all my life and never felt the ground shake the way it did today. It scared the life out of me, lol. I was working from home when I felt the ground in the house shaking. My wife immediately thought our boiler was about to blow up as if the pipes were all shaking within the walls/floor boards, lol. I ran to hit the emergency off switch on it and go down to take a look at it. It looked fine. I was like, wtf just happened. I went back up and looking outside, I don't see neighbors or anyone. I thought, was it just us or somewhere else? I thought, did a house explode from gas? I tried texting my neighbor and the text failed. I thought, did a T-Mobile tower explode? lol. I then called my neighbor and the call went through. He works about 25 miles from my house and he said they all felt it there, that it was a quake. I immediately felt better knowing it wasn't just at my house.

Upon further investigation, pretty nuts because my cousin lives in Whitehouse Station with his wife, 2 kids and 2 dogs. He didn't indicate anything crazy occurred (damage) when I text him, though simply said they felt it very strong. People will have vary opinions on how much folks might of freaked out about it, but it all comes down to the proximity and distance. I'm 46 minutes from Whitehouse Station (about 25 miles) and I was literally feeling my entire house shaking below me for about 15 seconds. It was scary stuff. Again, never experienced this before in my life.

Not to mention I had no power for the last two days due to crazy winds Wednesday evening. Like, what else could go wrong before this week is over?

"In the novels (notably From Russia, with Love), Bond's physical description has generally been consistent: slim build; a three-inch long, thin vertical scar on his right cheek; blue-grey eyes; a "cruel" mouth; short, black hair, a comma of which falls on his forehead."

Simple , successful formula. Never mind the Silver Surfer !!!

westworld, picard, star trek discovery. All series that shouldnt really have had more than one season.

Westworld first season was great. Picard seasons 1 & 2 are garbage but 3 was some fun. I don't remember much from season 1 of Discovery which I think says enough about it and the fact that I didn't watch anymore.

So I guess we agree. If Picard's only season can be number 3.

ST:D was fine when they were focusing on the war. That made it interesting. A whole series dedicated around Captain Lorca and the war with the Klingons would have been epic. Though the Captain Killy mirror episode was good because...reasons.

Picard was just there to blow nostalgic fans.

ST:SNW is awesome because of Pike and the fact that it reminds you that Star Trek can be more than a one trick pony. Except for the musical episode. Nobody asked for that.

Westworld was awesome...the first season. Everything after that was floundering in an attempt to expand a story that didn't need expansion and to justify huge budgets.
