Oh wow thats super early in the timeline eh. Interesting. Still years away from a new PC tho.

You would be surprised how well that runs, earlier maps and less vehicles means less ram usage after all, always worth a try.... assuming you already got Battletech (and the 3 "dlcs" from GoG that is) because if not, just wait for them to get on sale ;p

Yeah. I have yet to delve into the mods for Battletech but for whatever reason (Unity engine?) it's recommended to have an incredibly beefy PC for an older turn based game. I played shortly after launch of my ancient Sandy Bridge PC with only 8 GB and it was perfectly fine unmodded.

Personally I'm a Succession Wars era fan so the big two mega mods for the game haven't compelled me to try yet. Maybe years from now when I have a new PC with more than 16 GB.

Also, your RTX 4090 deserves better than a measly 3700X.
heheh if I was playing in 1080p or 1440p and needed 8000 fps then maybe I would upgrade the CPU. For 4k@120 - cpu and ram doesn't matter whatsoever. Maaaaaby some 1% lows here and there? Still not worth it. The money is much better spent on the graphics card.

As a 4K@144Hz gamer, I thought the same when I first put the RTX 4090 into my good old i9-9900K rig but then I found more and more info online that the CPU matters more than I thought, even at 4K ultra. So I upgraded to an i9-13900K very early last year (Jan 2023) and it was true. The shackles came off the RTX 4090 and it learned to fly .
I would definitely recommend to do yourself (and your 4090) a favor and get that sweet 5800X3D at the next opportunity (promo or sale). It is worth it.
I have yet to play a game where the performance is limited by the CPU and not the GPU. I don't play many Civ-type games, though. Maybe that is why. Also, the 4090 doesn't really need to fly, in fact I hate it when it tries! I more often than not limit the fps to 90 (depending on the game) to keep it quieter and prevent the jet turbines spinning up

Definitely. And depending on the games you play, 64GB can also be necessary for a gaming rig, e.g. if you are into sims like DCS World. It's been a recommendation for many years to have 64GB RAM for DCS World.

I also upgraded from 32GB DDR5-6800 to 64GB DDR5-6600 not too long ago. It is actually a DDR5-6800 kit and the 32GB kit was actually a DDR5-7200 kit but either my mobo or my CPU/IMC can not handle the nominal speeds so I had to dial back the speed a bit for 100% stability. 64GB of DDR5-6600 at CL32 latency is still pretty nice so I'm not complaining.

If anyone is in the business for memory (RAM, SSD, anything) then I would recommend to hurry up. Prices have been on the rise for a couple of months now and are expected to keep on rising throughout the entire year of 2024. Upgrading is only going to get more expensive from here on out.

For me it is less gaming and more workload intensive tasks. Try virtualizing a whole pool of virtualizing hosts running nested virtualization (yes, that word salad totally makes sense in this context) so you can run even more VMs because you are test piloting a whole tech stack shift. That 64GB ran out very, very quickly. None of what I run, game wise, really soaks up the resources anymore.

Though if I went with 256GB, I could carve off 64GB as a drive and use that as a fast cache...but then I'd need an Epyc Rome or better CPU and then the money starts getting real.

I'm running what was once near top-o-the-line. Now? Not really near top-o-the-line, but good enough to run Baldur's Gate 3 on high at 4K with no stuttering.

First, you do you, of course, but that is definitely a pretty unbalanced rig . 32Gb is a "must-have" for a high end gaming rig nowadays because many games are at least scraping past the 16GB barrier these days. RAM is also still pretty inexpensive compared to the RTX 4090 that you have. You can buy a really decent low latency 32GB DDR4-3600 CL14 kit for about €160 (including VAT). Sell the 16GB kit on eBay and it's even less.

Also, your RTX 4090 deserves better than a measly 3700X. You should do the poor guy a favor and marry him with a sweet ass 5800X3D CPU. I'm surprised you haven't done that a long time ago already. AMD had many a nice promo for the 5800X3D in the past. Sometimes plain discounts and sometimes juicy game bundles.

Whatcha waitin' for, homie? Buy, buy, buy!

Yea I recently went from 2x8GB to 2x16GB (both kits DDR4 3600 CL16) replaced out of sheer boredom. I noticed zero difference in anything. In theory 1% lows might be a little better nothing I noticed.
