Out of the Blue

It's probably not as significant as Code Red (mentioned above), but on a semi-related note, if I get another spam that says "I send you this file in order to have your advice" I'm going to start thinking it's the new 'all your base...' Actually I assume this is a virus, since the attachment is always a .pif or a .bat intended to look like a .txt file. Anyway, I also assume that at least some of you know what I'm describing here, since I have received about 30 of them myself over the course of a few days, including the international version, "Te mando este archivo para que me des tu punto de vista," so I can't imagine I'm the only one receiving them. I even just got what I've been finding lately to be the most obnoxious spam trick, which is to send it using my own name as the sender (presumably to foil filtering), though knowing these things often work by replicating a copy to send to your whole address list, maybe I'm actually infected too, and actually did send that to myself? Nah.

That's not the weird event of the overnight for me... my nutty coffee maker has gone off the deep end, making any previous nuttiness seem insignificant by comparison. I made a first pot that came out like weak tea. I was sure I put in enough beans (this coffee maker grids them for you), but there were hardly any grounds in the basket either, so I assumed I under-dosed there. I made another pot, and the same thing happened, only for the second one, I made doubly sure the right number of beans were present ("Back when I was picking beans in Guatemala, we used to make fresh coffee, right off the trees I mean."). This had the same result, maybe a tablespoon of grounds, and light tan coffee. So where did the beans go? That's the nutty thing... I have no idea at all, there's no trace of them anywhere to be found! Certainly having no coffee doesn't help one work mysteries like this out especially quickly, either (though I did steal off to Dunkin Donuts for a thermos as soon as I knew they'd be open).

Just get a 12 cup Mr. Coffee (or comparible), and a coffee bean grinder... You really can't go wrong with that set-up. Just make sure you get some good air-tight containers to store your beans in.

I''ve gone wrong with about every set-up you can imagine

Had the 12 cup Mr. Coffee... that's the one that the dreaded "steal -a-cup" feature would go haywire on, and flood the kitchen

As for stand-alone grinders, I've had it with the whirry-blade kind (they're choppers, rather than grinders anyway), and my one previous actual grinder (it was that Starbuck's house brand -- Barista, or something), worked okay until it died, but die it did.

The beauty of the all-in-one grinder and maker is that the coffee making cleans the grinder and you never have to bang the grinder around to get the grounds out (my old coffee dude in Park Slop keeps rubeer mallets by his grinders for this).

Beans dissapearing? I have a problem with carots dissapearing, not in a grinder or anything like that, but on the thing you rub them against so they become small pieces of wet carrot. Can´t figure out what it´s called... ehm...
Oh well, the problem is: The carrots are dissapearing and my arm is getting sore. Two carots seem to measure up to a tablespoon of orange sploinge(don´t have a better word for it!).
I´ve lost all my words tonight, perhaps it´s because I´m somewhat ill? Who knows...

ZDNET has just updated on the antics of this rather odd virus. There is a chance that it can render itself harmless !

And there i was thinking it so obvious as to not be noteworthy... I assume it's still one of your fave films, from your propensity towards quotation from it?

I have to say, I love it, but I haven't seen the Special Edition on DVD for a long while... I'll buy it when I next see it

On a related note, I imagine most of us know that Bryan Singer went on to direct X-Men, but Christopher McQuarrie, the writer, had his directorial debut with a film he also wrote, starring Benicio Del Toro (still one of my favourite actors). It was a modern-day take on a western, and I can't remember the name of it... I'd love to know what it's called so I can seek it out and watch it.

Any offers, o guru of pop culture?

TIA,

Rolphus

It's a virus, not a spam.

It made the news outlets yesterday. Its rather polymorphic and none of the anti-virus companies can agree on WTF it does. The latest I've seen is on http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2792223,00.html

I've gotten the same thing that blue describes, and I also run a rather large / popualar game-related website. I'm thinking us "public" internet figures need to make all our email links read "name@nospamdomain.com". But I suppose this would make to much work for the end user. On the other hand, my 'delete' finger is getting quite quick.

An important topic, coffee. Have you considered a French press? For one thing a French press gives you the opportunity to shout "J'accuse!" every time you make coffee.

Blue, I haven't been following the coffee machine saga too carefully, but it strikes me that the more a coffee machine does for you, the more mysteriously it screws up...

Have you considered using a cafetiere and a simple coffee bean-grinder (or indeed buying pre-ground coffee)? It takes a little longer, and you don't get the range of cappucino etc, but for a true caffeine addict (such as myself), I can think of no nicer way to drink "normal" coffee...

Just a thought, but it's what keeps me alive at work - we only have really crappy instant and no coffee machine
