EA Cutting Hundreds of Jobs; Sunsetting Games

An announcement from Electronic Arts shows the painful times for game developers are just getting worse by revealing that the company is firing approximately five percent of its workforce, estimated to be about 670 individuals. The message from CEO Andrew Wilson also says EA is sunsetting unspecified games and "moving away from development of future licensed IP that we do not believe will be successful in our changing industry." Here's word on the job cuts:
In this time of change, we expect these decisions to impact approximately 5 percent of our workforce. I understand this will create uncertainty and be challenging for many who have worked with such dedication and passion and have made important contributions to our company. While not every team will be impacted, this is the hardest part of these changes, and we have deeply considered every option to try and limit impacts to our teams. Our primary goal is to provide team members with opportunities to find new roles and paths to transition onto other projects. Where that’s not possible, we will support and work with each colleague with the utmost attention, care, and respect. Communicating these impacts has already begun and will be largely completed by early next quarter.

Before the socialist bleeding hearts get another seizure, here is some data: EA has added roughly 4,000 employees to their workforce in the past four years (2019 to 2023). Laying off 5%, or 670 individuals, is a minor correction after a very strong phase of growth.

Regarding the sunsetting of games, I guess this means that going forward they will only do FIFA, FIFA and then some more FIFA (or FC or whatever it is called now). Boring.

EA made six billion in profit in 2023. The $70 million they are saving per year by laying off these people instead of repurposing them is essentially meaningless to their bottom line.

Bingo. These companies are NOT close to failing. The "savings" they are so protective of are not making a dent in their earnings...they just feel the need to play follow the leader and make the workforce leaner because it means a smattering more profit to show the shareholders for applause. And all of them are due to bad decisions by the upper echelons of the company who NEVER feel any of the burn from their ill thought out plans. Well we fucked up here so lets shed some of the meaningless workers and laugh all the way to the next profit sharing!

Be sure to not take social security when you're due since socialism is terrible.

Both socialism and capitalism understand that a workforce needs to be adapted to the demand. Thus layoffs and socialism are not contradictory, it's just how it's handled that is the difference. In a truly socialist utopia society they would be retrained or redeployed to another work environment With EA being a quite large company, there will be compensations and as mentioned in the statement help with the transition - which in your view would probably be "socialist" as well. Depending on the country where they lay off staff there will be higher compensations than in others and depending on their economy the laid off staff will additionally have a social system to support them during seeking jobs.

Yea lets juke up this civil war of politics while AI takes the jobs so many thought were secure.
Just wait till one of those Chinese AI "hackers" succeeds in shutting down the power grid of several red states at the same time, bicker all you want in the dark.

Companies with the best AI are the richest companies on earth, they have real time analysis of everything the instant it is posted on the internet, funny how these companies are dominating capitalism. You don't think they also use their social media and political clout for any reason other than taking the whole pie, and let the working class become a historical curiosity which delights the 1%. They might even valuate the stocks of Electronic Arts higher just as long as EA adopts more AI and hires less humans.

So let those zingers fly about the other side. Have fun while big corporation's AI takes the whole pie in just a few short years.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride! - HT

Ahh must be an AfD goofball voter or at minimum a FDP Clown then, both parties are the anti-socialist dim wits here. CDU kinda but at least they pretend to care about social programs.

AfD the new nazi party
FDP you know them in the US as libertarians or Neoliberals, basically the „I‘m rich so I should be a protected class“ people.
CDU Christian Democrats… nuff said there.

And they are cutting back on government funding at the moment because they don’t want to raise taxes on the rich here. I immigrated at just the right time…

I'm as tired of unfettered capitalism as the next guy, but the ignorance on display when people talk about layoffs is just really annoying. You know, it's okay to actually be a little bit informed about the thing you hate and wish we didn't have, right? There's always the guy in the comments "You should fire all your executives and use the money you save to pay those employees to browse reddit at work!", or the guy who thinks that any Canuck who's washed out a glass at a bar can be a CEO and run a billions of dollars a year company. No you shouldn't, and no they can't.

What no one talks about when these layoffs happen and they are cursing the company for doing it, are the thousands upon thousands of other regular employees who are still working there. Those people wouldn't have jobs if companies were run the way the comment sections of the internet think they should be run. They'd just run the company into a hole and eventually go under and _everyone_ would lose their jobs.

The fact that capitalism has run rampant in this industry is precisely the reason there are so many people employed in it. And job security wasn't any better before these companies, either. If anything it was worse. Think back on the old days. Game studios went in and out of business on a weekly basis, and there were no severance packages or relocation assistance or social media groups to help people find new positions. If your main issue here is that "There are people who work in game dev, or want to work in game dev, who are without jobs." It's gonna be a really tough sell to convince me that hiring 4000 people and laying off 700 of them a few years later is worse than an alternative where the total headcount in game dev is a fraction of what it is now.

Now if you want to debate whether a smaller cottage industry is better for game quality and overall enjoyment of gamers than mass market capitalist machinery we have now, that's a more interesting topic. But I think if we're talking purely about jobs, then unfettered capitalism and relentless pursuit of growth is always going to mean more headcount on average at any given time, and just more aspiring game devs actually being able to do that.

There's a lot of downsides to capitalism and it's ultimately an unsustainable system which is why I don't support it. But it's the system we have, and within that system, there is a best and a worst way to run a company and a lot of in between.

Do you have a single fact to back that up?
