STAR WARS: Dark Forces Remaster Released

If you feel a slight disturbance in the Force, it's because the STAR WARS: Dark Forces Remaster is now available for Windows on GOG.com* and Steam, offering an updated version of this Star Wars first-person shooter originally released in 1995. Neither store features a launch discount, but GOG.com is giving customers who buy this in the first week a free copy of the original STAR WARS: Dark Forces (Classic, 1995). And for those who already own the original there, GOG is providing a 10% loyalty discount. Here's the Launch Trailer showing off the work Nightdive Studios put in to bring this classic into the modern era. Here's more:
Star Wars™: Dark Forces Remaster has been brought to life by the team at Nightdive Studios, fully remastered through its proprietary KEX engine, allowing the game to run on modern gaming devices at up to 4K resolution at 120FPS. New and returning players will enjoy Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster’s upgraded gameplay, high-resolution textures, enhanced lighting and rendering, and support for gamepads.

The original 1995 Star Wars: Dark Forces raised the bar for FPS games, offering players a significant degree of movement and interactivity, a large selection of items and power-ups, and engaging environments.

Personal taste is one thing, spreading misinformation is another.
If you can't handle nonsense being called nonsense, then I would say you need to watch something informative about "adulting".

The original is one of my favorite games, probably my favorite game at the time it came out and for years after.

However, this remaster looks arguably terrible, and I am not buying it. It's yet another nostalgic cash grab with upscaled textures.... meanwhile a new Star Wars FPS just got shitcanned at a modern studio.

People need to stop buying remasters or remakes, especially if they are this low effort.

*Disclaimer* Cool opportunity for people who weren't even alive in 1995 to play this obviously, but they too, would have probably been better served by a modern Dark Forces sequel than this reskin.

*EDIT* Should have read the other comments first, a lot of people already said what I just typed.
The textures aren't just upscaled, nor is this a low effort remaster. They put in a lot of work across the board for this.
I recommend watching something informative like the Digital Foundry video on it, before spouting nonsense.

Yo, that price is nuts for this. I've never played it, but would never pay that much for a game that old, even remastered.

I suppose everyone has their own Star Wars gaming nostalgia. For me, it was Shadows of the Empire on the N64. I remember doing to a spoiled buddies house on Christmas day and he fired it up. Nothing quite like seeing the Battle of Hoth on a day where it snowed in the morning and everything was white outside. Not to mention the classic sound effects and soundtrack. Was a very fine time to be a gamer. Though that game was also rough when it came to the controls. They could be hella awkward on foot.

I replay Shadows of the Empire every few years.
Was time too, just installed it from Steam, thanks for mentioning it.

- Use Nvidia to set SOTE.exe at 30 FPS, and Vsync On, if the game is too fast.

- Run the game from SOTE.exe, not the steam icon, you get more options for running it.

- Name your pilot "R Testers ROCK" (no quotes), and you can access all levels at once.

- Also with that pilot you can crouch for some 15 seconds and get Full Health, All Weapons, Full Ammo, and Temporary Invincibility.

- Update on Shadows of the Empire:
Yeah, too old with no remake or even with new models or textures, but finished it in a speedrun for old times.
But it wasn't worthwhile, archiving it.
Cheat Engine:
Laser Pistol, Float, 100
Health, Float 100, address + 12 bytes = Laser Pistol address
Seeker Pistol, Float 100, Laser Pistol address + 12
Jet Pack on level 5, Float 100
Lives each level: 4 to 0, 4 Bytes, fixed address.

--------------
Dark Forces by Nightdive: totally underwhelmed, uninstalled.
Plus moving has a terrible inertia, like your are in a boat. On ice.

Prefer using the free Force Engine Mod, not that different visually AND it has Quicksaving (Nightdive's, not.)
Specially when they finally add accelerated graphics.

What are you guys smoking? There's nothing low-effort about this remaster, but I do agree the price is too high for me, having bought SW Dark Forces on GOG for like $3 on a recent sale. I'll load that into the engine update on Flatpak and have some fun. No need for spending $40 thanks.
Nightdive has done well. I really enjoyed their Quake and Quake 2 remasters they released, especially their new Q2 episode. Wish they'd do Duke Nukem 3D...
Also, they have remastered more games than I knew about. They did Tex Murphy apparently?

probably my favorite 2d FPS (After Doom2).
But it was the multiple floor levels that blew me away, with spiral staircases and the like.

The kind of thing that seems ridiculously trivial these days, which tells me that going back and playing again would be a bad idea.

In an era of revolutionary games (the 90s) this was one on the top of the lists. This was the era of Doom clones, and yet this was anything but one. It had a great story, brilliant level design, and it introduced mouse look, jumping, and crouching. (I bet you thought Duke Nukem 3d did that). Absolutely brilliant game, probably my favorite 2d FPS (After Doom2).

The Force Engine port is already quite good and a free download so this is a very tough sell at $30. It’s hard to see the point unless your a console pleb and never played it. I still added to Steam wishlist might grab on a deep sale someday.

more a reshade than a remaster. Hard pass, this is one game that is best left as a good memory.
Yeah no, the game runs at a much higher resolution and framerate, with EVERY asset redone in HD. They even created completely new 3D videos for the cutscenes instead of just upscaling them, and all of this is very faithful to the original. Along with a lot of other improvements and QoL additions, this is another example of a remaster done right. The price IS a bit high though, $25 at most would have been more palatable.

It doesn't, this remaster is based on the Force Engine Code, if anything it has more features.

IgWannA wrote on Feb 28, 2024, 18:03:
I would pretty well expect the game to run at 4K 120 fps considering it's pushing less than 100 polygons.

Honestly, this Remaster was not necessary. I think the old pixelated look is just better. I really dislike the cartoon-ised cutscenes, they lose the art style of the original.
Based on the review I watched, the game will run at whatever framerate your PC can handle, it's only consoles that have it locked at 60. Besides that, the cutscenes are the exact same artstyle of the original, just in a higher resolution. But if they really bu you for some reason, you can swap between the old lowres style and the new one on the fly if you want anyways.

I'm going to get it because I have fond memories of this game. But the price is kinda high for this. I wouldn't have expected it to be more than $19.99, or even $14.95. I'm hoping Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight is next because that game was HUGE for me back when it came out. I played it soo much with my nephew and even got into modding through the Massassi Temple's website.
Wait no more:
Finished DF 2 with the recently released releasing "Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2 Remastered Mod version 3.3".

Amazing mod, with very good models and textures, and QOLs.

€28.99 for this ancient garbage = hardcore drugs and hardcore greed combined!

I played the original back in the day and only remember it as pretty decent (sure, the Star Wars atmosphere was pretty amazing at a time when many games still had MIDI music but that was 1995 and there are much better immersive Star Wars games nowadays).

Disgusted as I am about the infinite greed, I will only pick this up when it is very cheap and part of a bundle or cheap on sale at CDKeys.com or something.

Nightdive have clearly fallen to the dark side, although their name is kind of a dead giveaway in that regard, I guess... they have plunged head first to the dark side .

Read this news and immediately went to look it up on Steam. Saw the price tag and relegated it to my wishlist to await at least a 50% off sale. Great memories of the original, but not even a slight temptation at that price.
I did the same at GOG. I have the original, and it's still a lot of fun for me, but I'm going to get this, eventually, for the controller support. I saw a link to https://theforceengine.github.io/ in an article about this, so I may try this out while waiting for the remaster to go on sale at GOG.
