Out of the Blue

So thanks for the help with my pdf printing issue yesterday. I'm usually pretty brave about admitting my stupidity, but I have to confess I was tempted to not revisit this out of embarrassment. There's not that much to what happened. A few of you commented that you were mystified that the settings in Acrobat couldn't handle what I was asking. This led to my lightbulb moment: People actually still use Adobe Acrobat! Printing from various browsers and other reader software was failing me, and I never once considered going to the source. I swore off it years ago when it was at the low-point of its security woes, and while it seems to remain a vulnerability, there's no denying it's the right tool for the job. Sure enough, branding my machine with the scarlet letter allowed me to print my label as easily as, well, printing a label. Acrobat also tried to install an intrusive browser plugin without permission, so yeah, Adobe still has feet of clay when it comes to security.

Marginally Improved Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.

Hey it’s the end of February here and I have not seen snow in 4 weeks now! Everything is fine! It’s just a natural correction! It’s this or that! Distract and distract to avoid the truth, we done F’d up.

the trick with adobe acrobat is not to install the consuner version. Take time to craft an enterprise installer (its still free) and you dont get any of the shite.

99 percent accuracy sounds nowhere NEAR precise enough for the stated application. That means 1 out of every 100 will come back as inauthentic, even though it's legit.

And 'Accuracy' itself is a terrible metric, out of more than a dozen possible evaluations you can perform on a binary classification system. Mathews Correlation Coefficient (MCC) is my current favorite, but it won't give a number in the high 90's most of the time and just explaining it is complex - so it isn't as marketable as "Accuracy."

Otherwise, very cool tech.

That Willy Wonka experience in Glasgow was a subject in an FB group I'm a member of that points out scams that use AI images.

Apparently the company hosting the event used an AI image generator to post images on their website showing what the event would look like. Needless to say it looked nothing like the AI image shown here: https://twitter.com/AlsikkanTV/status/1762235022851948668

I have a need to password protect, edit and make notes on PDFs, but I refuse to use Adobe. My PDF editor (which is also my default PDF reader and what I use for printing PDFs) is Kofax Power PDF. I like it's ease of use. It allows me to easily merge pages from one document into another, and the markup tools are adequate. I've never come across any issues reading or printing a document. No sneaky plugins, it just works, and it's a one time license. Been using it on my workstation for a decade.

I have run into issues in the past with being able to properly open or print PDFs in browsers. Especially complex PDFs like the tax forms from Edwards Jones that have the first two pages in portrait, and the rest in landscape, or the business licenses downloaded from the state of Florida, that have certificate keys to prove their validity.

I LOLed - poetic description. I hope you removed that STD from your computer after you finished printing.

Foxit Reader is an alternative for potential future PDF issues. I have no idea if it would work for the particular problem you were having, but it won't make your PC leak any discharge, so it might be worth a try before literally anything made by Adobe.
Foxit has its own data discharge it leaks nowadays, which is why I quit using it.

The Kellogg's CEO must not check the price of the cereals they produce. Theirs won't save you any money by having them for dinner.

A customer of mine was having a problem printing out a PDF certificate that the high school gave one of his children. I ended up with the "take a screenshot and print that", having exhausted all other attempts.
Never even once thinking about using Adobe Acrobat or Adobe reader.
Thanks for letting us know it worked, I will definitely put that in my tool bag.
