New GeForce Drivers and NVIDIA App Beta

NVIDIA announces the release of new version 551.61 WHQL-certified GeForce Windows drivers to accompany the Early Access launch of Nightingale by adding DLSS 3 and Reflex support to the survival game. This comes along with the launch of the first public beta of a new NVIDIA App. Word is this kicks off efforts at cleaning up what has become a messy pile of applications to support NVIDIA GPUs, calling it "a first step in our journey to modernize and unify the NVIDIA Control Panel, GeForce Experience, and RTX Experience apps." Here's more on the new NVIDIA App:
Featuring a unified GPU control center, the NVIDIA app allows fine-tuning of game and driver settings from a single place, while introducing a redesigned in-game overlay for convenient access to powerful gameplay recording tools, performance monitoring overlays, and game enhancing filters, including innovative new AI-powered filters for GeForce RTX users.

This initial beta release incorporates many of the top features from our existing apps, optimizes the user experience, includes an optional login to redeem bundles and rewards, and introduces new RTX capabilities to elevate your gaming and creative experiences.

Can you honestly say the new, modern settings panel in Windows is in any way superior to the old, quaint Control Panel? In many ways it's worse.

Don't know yet about this new version but the current control panel sucks. I had an AMD card some 2 or so years ago and was surprised how much better their control panel was then Nvidia one. For one I could go into the overlay while in a game and have access to bunch of settings to be set per game on the fly, or globally if I wanted to, or bunch of performance settings and how often they should update and where to display them. On Nvidia control panel by comparison, to change any of those settings, I had to quit the game, open the control panel, wait like 10 seconds for it to load, switch to the per game settings, hope it's in that slow dropdown that has a ton of applications with no search function. If it's not there click Add button, wait like another 30 seconds for the list of recent apps to load, then hope it's in that list otherwise you need to go digging for the executable of the app you want to set the settings for. This might have been ok 10-15 years ago, not now.
Exactly what I'm saying.
I'm also saying that but...quietly.
Oh yeah well I'm whispering it more quietly than you are.

I tried the beta of the new Nvidia overlay, from quick look I suppose it's better then it was, but could be way better.

The performance overlay does not allow you to switch text color, size, or opacity, just if it has a background or not, line break up and position on the screen. It's also missing the bottom 1% fps counter it had before, so maybe re-add that and also add bottom 1% frame times. Could have a little line chart for frame times like other overlays do.

I do wish the Graphics driver settings, global and per game were available in the overlay, so for example maybe set max fps setting as I am playing instead of needing to quit or Alt+tab. Lastly it needs sorting options in the per program settings.list cause I don't even know what it's sorting it by, the apps seem all over the place.

These features should be settings at the driver level and not have to be enabled on a per game basis.

Looks like after all these years of having an inferior gui for their drivers compared to AMD, they finally caught up? I guess this is the privilege of being #1 in the market, you can have the worst driver GUI that looks and feels like something from 2002 and you don't need to update for over 2 decades.

This was my first thought as well since I haven't installed anything beyond those in years.

And as long as they don't re-enable automatic optimization of installed titles. That is a huge pain in the ass.

As long as they don't "modernize" it by removing all of the user-facing options. There are a huge number of solutions to game issues that are solved through the control panel. Hiding, say, pre-rendered frames would break a whole bunch of fixes.

How about no, nVidia? Please keep the option to install a slim driver-only version. I definitely don't want no GFE garbage or the account requirement or your telemetry on my precious PC. Let's keep it clean and tidy!

Although I neverminded the ancient (by software standards) NVCP it's cool they are remaking it. I just hope it remains slim and performant but that's doubtful. Going to update drivers tonight and give it a shot.

Excited about this. It's about time the old control panel was replaced. It's been pretty much the same since like Windows XP? Intel and AMD's software has looked so much better, so it's about time Nvidia catches up. Also no mandatory logins anymore!!
