Epic Games Store Gave Out 580M Games in 2023

The Epic Games Store 2023 Year in Review is here with a retrospective on 2023. Word is the store now boasts over 270 million users, up 40M from the prior year. There are now over 804M epic cross-platform accounts and monthly active users are up to 75M from 68M in 2022. This also has details on the store's weekly giveaways, a straight-up trade of money for user engagement that is either genius or unsustainable, depending on who you ask. Word is: "The Epic Games Store Free Games program continues to thrive, as we continued to partner with a variety of talented developers and publishers to bring our users 86 free games last year, worth over $2,000 USD total. More than 580 million free games in total were claimed this year, bringing those titles to new and expanded audiences." The post concludes with a look ahead, discussing new features coming to the store in 2024:
In 2023, we focused heavily on the back-end developments for the Epic Games Store in order to deliver our partners some highly requested features. While we still have many developer-focused features to ship, in 2024 we are shifting the majority of our attention to improving game discovery, and the player experience overall. Here are some of our top priorities for the 2024 roadmap:

  • A wholly new Download Manager is coming in early 2024. As expected, you will be able to control timing with updates, schedule downloads, reorder your queue, and more.
  • We are making significant improvements to Offline Mode, including the ability to deliberately switch to an offline state, a smoother launcher experience with clear error information, and improved authentication flows for users with limited connectivity.
  • Social Improvements: Let’s make your friends list more meaningful, and give you more options for communicating with your friends.
  • Pre-loading for pre-purchases.
  • Subscription Support: This will let developers and publishers with their own subscription service bring them to the Epic Games Store. Crucially, you will also be able to earn Rewards with subscriptions purchased on the Epic Games Store.
  • Dynamic Bundles: Want to take advantage of a great bundle of content, but already own some of the items? You’ll be able to do so without losing out on the cost savings.
  • …and launch on iOS in Europe!

I didn't suggest that businesses compete solely for our benefit. When I mentioned "ultimately benefit gamers on both platforms," I meant that better consumer deals and features are positive outcomes of competition. We benefit from companies vying for customers.

You're correct. But it also means their store would draw more customers away from Steam, forcing Valve to compete. Epic would also need to compete in response, leading to competition based on features and merit. That back and forth would ultimately benefit gamers on both platforms. Win-win.

When it's time for him to shop, he may have reason to stay there. It's familiar to him. And that 17 year old will be a 24 year old, the group the spends the most on games, very soon.

^ this 100% d'accord ... a lot of people are way too caught up in their own little bubble. Most of us here, on forums like these, are "boomers" with day 1 Steam accounts. We are not Epic's target demographic. Like, at all.

Also, yes, it's been confirmed by Sweeney himself literally years ago that publishers get a flat fee that is negotiated per title.

I thought devs were paid a Lump Sum when they agreed to be a freebie on EGS. So whether a 10,000 people snag it or 100,000 - the devs get one flat fee that doesn't change.

Businesses will perform the least amount of effort for maximum gain. They do not care about competing for your benefit. Moreover, almost all businesses have adopt the "attract and extract" mentality. Right now, EGS is very much in the attract phase with giveaways and exclusivity. The fact that there are still people railing about exclusivity is, well, funny. Every business operates on exclusivity. You're not buying a Mustang at a Honda dealership. You're not buying a IH combine at a John Deere dealership. You're rarely going to find the same brand of tool at Home Depot and Lowes.

Despite the fact that it would make a difference to some people if EGS was as good of a platform as Steam when deciding where to buy from, I do somewhat agree with Beamer. Most of us who primarily use Steam (me included) aren't much interested in ever buying from Epic no matter what. I still want them to improve - they just aren't up to scratch on so many things they have had ample time to get as good as or even better than Steam. It's just not realistic to expect that they ever become realistic competition with how lacking they are in so many areas. Without more serious competition I still will have to put up with the things that Steam sucks at without them being compelled to improve.

So far I've been making do with the Heroic Launcher. It is decent but wont run some games.

I just want the ability to install a game, go offline and be left the fuck alone.

Exactly. It's a shame they didn't think of any of the dozens of obvious improvements over half a decade ago. They've basically done diddly squat since launch, and that's exactly how much attention I'm giving their storefront.

Thats, really awesome! Tim Sweeney should be proud. Fuck man, when I was a kid the only games I could afford were the ones I pirated or shoplifted, so that's kind of awesome for the poor's. But on the other side, maybe Tim is setting the poor's up for failure, they will never learn how to use a computer machine like I did, why would they when all the games are giving to them to play for free? I was reading Phrack Magazine and 2600 when I was 11, fuck man... between that and this dude I meet at the church, that shit changed my life. Not because that dude raped me or anything, but he did cool shit, he built this modular synth in his garage, he held a weekly class for church folk to teach Basic, attended by me, and three of my friends, he even took us to his job one day, and let us 12–14-year-olds play with a fucking electron microscope. That shit was dope.

I actually supported Epic's game store once back when The Outer Worlds released as a timed exclusive and I wanted to show my support for Obsidian. A year later I bought the game again on Steam when it was more patched and had a lot more content for less money. On the other hand, in 2023 alone I downloaded over $2000 worth of free games from EGS. I'm not sure I would be classified as a supporter. If you look at it in torrent terminology I am decidedly in the "leech" category.

That said, I can easily point to the fact that having a high-profile alternative (they are too small to be a competitor yet) has unquestionably made Steam (and GOG to a lesser extent) better. So I hope they survive and thrive. Sweeney is an asshole but Steam needs competition from somewhere.

The strategy is clear: comp users a license on EGS so that they don't give Valve 30% for a Steam license of the game later on.

LOL, that's a good one with extra points for creativity!

That is not the strategy at all, of course. Steam annual revenue = $9bn vs. EGS annual revenue = $0.95bn. The mini-effect of an EGS freebie is as small as a piss in the ocean.

The real strategy is to get active users and ideally returning customers via the freebies. Epic wants people to create accounts. Every account and every single store visit to claim a freebie is an x% chance at getting business. It is as simple as that. That is the strategy.
