In my opinion, that simulated 7.1 audio is utter nonsense. It's artificial software generated surround. Might be fine for music but I certainly wouldn't want it on in a game. Some games have their own built-in 3D positional audio magic. That's why a some games specifically ask whether you're using headphones or not.

rtings won't even test that type of audio software when reviewing audio hardware

I found what I was looking for.
These headphones have a virtual soundstage available which can make your PC 7.1 surround-compatible, you'd have to download their software in order to use it.

Otherwise "The Razer BlackShark V2 X have a poor passive soundstage, which is common for closed-back gaming headphones. They don't have a particularly large or natural-sounding soundstage, and audio is perceived as coming from the inside of your head rather than in front of you."

None of the above is a showstopper, so I put a slickdeals alert on them because everything else about them is ok and the price is right.

While I have a good 2.1 speaker system with a sub woofer, I mostly play with over ear headset with a mic boom.

I have a large head, large ears, and my ears are very sensitive, so finding a good headset is always a challenge. They need to go around my ears, as anything pressing on my ears will give me a headache after 30 minutes.

I used to use a Plantronics Gamecom, but I wore them out last year, and they don't make them anymore. Lately I am using a Razer BlackShark V2 X Gaming Headset which is very comfortable, has bass good bass, and blocks out room noise very well.
The BlackShark has a Closed Back (which increases bass by itself), but what sort of magic does Razer do to open up the sound stage. Or maybe that is something I only think about when listening to music.
I can ask you that because you know audio.

Powered speakers with a subwoofer are my preference for gaming audio. Nothing like the feeling of the audio from a grenade going off to rattle the old bones.
The sub under my desk from a klipsch 2.1 200watt setup would move the jeans on my pants. It spooked me the first time a grenade went off.

Over the ear “Open Back” headphones are the way. If you have to shield the noise from other people, then you’re not really gaming.

Gaming headset vs gaming earbuds - which should you buy?

For me the choice will always be over the hear headphones. I find earbuds tend to become uncomfortable when worn for extended periods of time.
