Blizzard Introduces New President

Blizzard announces February 5th is the first day for Johanna Faries as President of Blizzard Entertainment following the departure of Mike Ybarra along with hundreds of other former employees. Faries joined Activision as part of the Call of Duty team, most recently as General Manager of the franchise. The post gives us a look behind the curtain at her message to her colleagues, which touches on the individuality of Activision, Blizzard, and King, at least for now:
Activision, Blizzard, and King are decidedly different companies with distinct games, cultures, and communities. It is important to note that Call of Duty’s way of waking up in the morning to deliver for players can often differ from the stunning games in Blizzard’s realm: each with different gameplay experiences, communities that surround them, and requisite models of success. I’ve discussed this with the Blizzard leadership team and I’m walking into this role with sensitivity to those dynamics, and deep respect for Blizzard, as we begin to explore taking our universes to even higher heights.

I am committed to doing everything I can to help Blizzard thrive, with care and consideration for you and for our games, each unique and special in their own right. I’m optimistic about our ability to serve our current and future player communities, and to further amplify the shared passion for greatness, polish, and creative mastery that is a hallmark of Blizzard’s approach to game-making.

When she starts pointing out how unique and special we all are. That lost me right there. I don't need to be told I'm special. Only those who think they need to beat that drum do that shit. Plus she comes from COD. that pretty much sums it up.

FWIW she actually made something out of nothing with Call of Duty esports, so I'll reserve judgment until we see how it goes.

I don't expect anyone picked to lead Blizzard to be much more than a mouthpiece for the suits behind the scenes, but she can't be worse than Brack.

Though I expect there to be a considerably smaller chance of another 'Cosby Suite' under her.

She is fundamentally right, but I think the Blizzard she is talking about is dead and gone. Activision has basically drained it dry and been wearing its skin as a suit for years. Diablo 4 was solid up until endgame (narratively at least) and gives me a little hope that some talent within the studio remains, but you can see the crud that Activision forced into the design that old Blizzard wouldn’t of even thought of implementing.

Was hoping for a fresh IP from Blizzard that could demonstrate more of that talent, but with the cancellation of their survival title (which was a toss-up on how impressive that could of been) it will probably just be another decade of expansions and seasons before we see anything truly innovative from them.

We will see dude, but I think like what Monk said, that Blizz is dead and gone.

Look at the mess D4 is. Rinse and repeat Seasons. Then strip all that you acquired at the end of it. Screw all that, what incentive is there to play that when they just remove all the special stuff you get.

Thankfully Last Epoch is around the corner. Then POE 2

Putting aside the fact that your manner of stating "facts" was not actually "wholly objective," but rather a snide derisive shitpost...

What was your source for your "objective fact" that she "never played a video game in her life"?

She was good for CDL. There were mistakes made during her time overseeing CoD, but how many of those were inherited and how many were hers, is a different question.

I wouldn't want to guess how she'll be on overwatch for the lot. CoD is pretty much fucked under M$, anyway, and since that was the only thing Acti Blizzard made worth talking about, I'm not sure it matters, anyway.

Quake and Doom, Halo without Bungie, and CoD... all owned by that idiotic company. Twenty-year-old me would have shit his boots, laughing, if I'd told him this is how it was going to end.

Blizzard or whoever it was finally turned WoW around and made it fun again. I hope this person keeps the trend going there. WoW doesn’t need another Shadowlands…

Cant wait for the great idea to create a Blizz Meta Universe shooter and market it as the next big esport thing in an attempt to mitigate current state CoD and Overwatch.

After the 15 year height of Blizzard circa 1995-2010 (D2, SC2, WoW, etc.), they have pretty much hit rock bottom. A fresh from the top is definitely a good thing and a welcome change.

Choosing someone from COD though is... not good. COD is one of the most braindead franchises in all of gaming, so spammy and arcadey in design it has no respect for the vast array of deadly firearms it portrays, but who knows, maybe she'll do well here.

Yeah, like every other CEO it's more of the same bullshit, as if the suits on top ever get into the nitty gritty of actual game design. This person is not going to be making the next Diablo, or the next Starcraft, or whatever Blizzard ends up making, and even if she is.....who cares? Seriously. Who gives a shit? What was the last really great game that Blizzard released? (That wasn't a remaster or a remake)
