Palworld Sells 2M in 24 Hours; Addresses Connection Issues

Following the news that Palworld sold over a million copies in eight hours comes a follow-up post announcing the Pokemon-inspired multiplayer game sold over two million copies in the 24 hours following its launch. This post adds that its 730K+ concurrent players is already the tenth highest peak user count in Steam history. This success has lead to some failure, as this post discusses the connectivity issues caused by the unexpected surge of players. The Windows version of the game is on Steam, but the team had to hold an emergency meeting with Epic to deal with a backend problem with the Unreal Engine. Word is this should clear things up:
Hello everyone,
Regarding the connection issues when trying to host co-op:
The number of players exceeded 700,000 concurrent players, and a problem occurred in the Epic Games backend.

We had an emergency meeting with the Epic Games team and had them add an update to the Epic Games backend at short notice. We have confirmed that this has resolved the connectivity errors and issues when hosting co-op games on Xbox and PC.

You should notice an improvement in connectivity and the errors should start to disappear shortly.

It's looking more and more probable that this game is little more than an asset-flip that relies heavily on AI-generated content.

From that ^ article:
"One of the Pocketpair CEO’s X posts from 2022 discussed how he believed generative AI tools could one day be sophisticated enough to avoid copyright issues. In another potentially more damning post from 2021, Mizobe showed how AI could be used to generate new Pokémon designs."

It doesn't help that they're claiming nearly all of the 'Pals' were designed by a single person who just graduated, and no-one's seen any actual concept art for the game.
You're acting like these are complex designs and models that are hard to create, any decent graduate could create loads of these easily.

No it doesn't.

Uhhh... I don't know much, but that's basically fucking Pikachu. Toss in "capture" game mechanics and they're gonna have a fight on their hands. They have to argue that their characters are "similar but legally distinct". I wouldn't take that bet over the 5 seconds of footage I linked.

Tell me you've never seen a Pikachu in your life. 🤣

And game mechanics are not copyrightable.

Yep, there are lots of different cuts of meat to be found from defeating Pals and they all eat the same foods you do. Then, instead of "releasing" unwanted creatures into the wild to get rid of them, you use a butcher's knife... Or sell them on the black market.

Yeah, I don't think I downloaded any blueprints for Factorio until well after having 1,000 hours in. The nuclear power can be a bit of a hassle. Figured it out my own the first time. After that when I wanted it I used a blueprint. But I rarely use it anyway, generally just put down a silly amount of solar panels and accumulators.

I'm at ~70 hours in, and I just built the rocket. I still need to build the satellite for science packs. I just recently got the hang of blue prints, and built my first spider thingy when the rocket was being assembled. I refuse to lift blueprints off the web, but I will look to other designs for inspiration. Once I built it myself in-game, I allow myself to blueprint. I did meticulously copy tile for tile a 4x4 lane balancer...

I'm on a 1.1 pirated version at the moment. Next month I'm going to buy 8 copies so I can host a server and get my children into it. Factorio is a good intro to workflows, automation, and programming. Shhhh... don't tell them my true motives.

Epic is giving away infinifactory this week. it is a zachtronics building puzzle game. I enjoyed it. I need to do factorio at some point, just a heavy time investment. satisfactory also, I have spent some time in it but I'd rather do it with 1.0

Both are very good. I have a minor preference for Factorio over Satisfactory because the late game in Satisfactory feels so much more grindy than it does in Factorio. But Satisfactory does have better graphics. Top three factory games for me, starting at the top: Dyson Sphere Program, Factorio, Satisfactory.

I hesitate to buy any of these games that go viral nowadays. I tried some and found out that too often it was pixelated dreck like "become a gardener and talk to pixel people in a town" and stuff like that. Usually there is just nothing IMO exciting to do in those games, they feel shallow and mostly empty to me and usually look like Commodore 64 games. Been there, done that back when I owned an Atari 2600, a C64, and an Amiga. If you like these retro games, good for you, but I am not going back there because back in the days, I was just hoping that one day we would get deeper games with more realistic graphics, so I am quite happy with modern games. We live in a time where even indie games can look good.

Did you forget to use your eyes to look at the game?

Nope. It looks alright. I was talking about most of the hyped indie games of the last few years and they all looked like games that I played 4 decades ago. And beyond this they often have some "Zen meditation" gameplay mechanics like "oh, a garden, let us plant flowers and commute with pixel neighbors" stuff that is about as exciting as watching paint dry. Actually, if the paint has a nice color, watching it dry might even be the better choice.

About THIS currently hyped game: I have never been into Pokemon because I was already too old when this game for kids was released, so... Well, enslaving cute little monsters to make them work for you is intriguing for an old grumpy gamer like me. Devilish Can I feed some pokemons to other pokemons? Evilgrin

I checked here on the site and Palworld has been mentioned before but I have absolutely no recollection of it. I have no idea what it is, checking I see some calling it "Pokeman with guns". Well, seeing as I have spent exactly zero minutes playing anything Pokeman related that might explain why I didn't know what it was. I hope everyone who bought it enjoys the hell out of it. I'll take a pass.

Old or not you can usually tell a good game no matter what. And this isn't a good game. It's mindnumbingly boring and shallow. My prediction, will lose 95% players within a week.
The fact its gone viral is actually not surprising. A game like this was missing in the market.

This is a great time to release anything because zero AAA games come out this time of the year. Valheim did the same thing also also did gangbusters sales immediately.

At the core, it's a persistent survival/crafting game like ARK or Rust, and just like those the bulk of the entertainment is going to be how lots of players interact with each other in a shared environment. Unless you're someone like me, who just enjoys exploring a new open world map and grinding up a tech tree and building bases in various locations, all of which can be done solo/offline. Then this game has the added wrinkle of a monster battler game, with you collecting and leveling up endless numbers of 100+ unique species of creatures that come with randomized sub-traits (and very rarely spawn as a 'lucky' variant). They all have different combat or utility skills to help you in the field as well as different tasks they're suited for performing at your base. Many of them can be ridden as mounts, which gives you direct control of their mobility (ground, sea, or sky) and attack powers. There are always other creatures roaming around to fight for the XP or item drops, oversized versions of them that serve as world bosses (and extra hard capture challenges), instanced dungeon areas that offer exclusive materials and equipment, NPC camps to raid, and randomized waves of human or non-human enemies that periodically attack your base(s). On top of all that, it's from an indie company instead of huge family-friendly corporation, so they aren't afraid to make it dark and funny and just plain ridiculous.

These creatures potentially being AI-generated means fuck-all to me... It's not like painstakingly designing them by hand made other genre knock-offs that much better. But this is very close to the Pokémon game I've always wanted to see made, and it's only version 0.1.2 as of now.

They need to address the lack of key bindings. Ill never understand how any developer making a pc game can over look the key bindings, that is just pure laziness. So fricking annoying!!
