DOOM at 30 - Romero/Carmack Livestream Today

As noted above and below, id Software's DOOM was first released 30 years ago today. Here's a reminder that a livestream is planned for 3:00 pm EST today where id Software co-founders John Carmack and John Romero will reunite to discuss the occasion, which feels significant considering Carmack basically fired Romero back in 1996. But they were said to still be on good terms even at that time, and a lot of water has gone under the bridge since. The session will be on Twitch and moderated by David L. Craddock. Here are some more celebrations of today's 30th anniversary of the original launch of DOOM on December 10, 1993. Thanks Frans.

No 3D models compare to Cheello's voxel pack, it's as faithful as you can get while still making the sprites 3D.
Thanks Razumen trying them tomorrow !

I'm using ZDL 3.2.2.2: awesome little launcher.
I tried the Vanilla Doom3D Models with Gzdoom-4-11-3.a.-Windows-64bit. ZDL had no issues. I don't have the "3D_models_weapons.wad" you speak of so maybe that is causing an issue?
ZDL was fantastic when it worked, so I will try the 3.2.2.2 version, thanks man !

For sure, but that's just the default graphics. This question seemed to be about a pick-up, but that's probably that's all it is.

No these were definitely in some versions of the game. I played some Doom, and some Wolfenstein3d but Doom2 was my "gateway" drug into PC gaming. That and Dune2. I can't believe how much fun I had with those games. Hell the 90s were an awesome time to be a kid/teenager in general but especially if you were into computers and gaming.
Weren't they in every version of the game?
Knuckle dusters? Are we talking about the Berserk power-up? That's in every version to be sure.

My memory is getting hazy, fisting in Doom was a thing before you got the chainsaw? I believe that in Doom2 if you didn-t have the chainsaw, you fought with your fists...:/ The berserk power up just made your fists super strong.

Pfft. And you people call yourselves gamers! (this is playful sarcasm, btw.)

Prior to the chainsaw, you have your fists. While you see your fists with gloves when holding weapons, if you punch, your left hand has a pair of spiked knuckledusters/brass knuckles.

I wasn't much of a Doom fan, frankly--I couldn't see what the fuss was about 30 years ago...;) A lot of that was because at the time the game shipped, I was already deep into the newly emerging, flowering C= Amiga universe of magical hardware sent back in time from the year 3000 Anno Domine, and Doom, being restricted to the province of caves and stone tools, absolutely looked and sounded like a comparison between the ethereal Punk rock band The Illiterate Slobs (as I imagined they might have been), and the works within the Sistine Chapel, late of Michelangelo! To me, these ID (or id) games were like a traveling carnival version of shooting fish in a barrel--something it may not surprise you to learn I also didn't much like. Flashing colors and bright lights, punctuated by loud cracks and booms at signal moments, I found unworthy of my (and anyone else's) attention in those days. At best, it seemed worthy of an epileptic seizure or two. Doom, I was certain, was doomed. Heh...;)

Rather amusing to see Romero referred to as an id "co-founder", though...;) IIRC, Romero was a mediocre level design person hired on at id, speaking charitably, and when asked a few years ago if he could envision a new "collaboration" between himself and Romero, John Carmack struggled for a moment as if trying to place where Romero had actually fit within id in those days, and said, paraphrased, "Well, I can see him involved in another Commander Keen, maybe," but that was apparently as far as it went....;) Since then, Romero has taken every opportunity to insert himself alongside Carmack when possible, in such a proximity that one could be forgiven for concluding that it was Romero, rather than Carmack, who put id Software on the map!

As I recall, it wasn't until Quake II that I began an interest in this sort of game. Then Sweeney came in with Unreal and the genre began to develop towards what exists today. Opinions vary on what that is, I might add...;)

It is well known that I cannot err--and so, if you should happen across an error in anything I have written you can be absolutely sure that *I* did not write it!...;)

Tried Sigil II.
Location boring and uninspired for me ? -like Sigil I mostly-.
Though really only finished the first 2 maps, yeah , I think I'll play it for the sake of having a true idea of it.

Instead I would recommend playing any of the winners in Cacodemon Awards (1x1.wad for example, or older ones like BTSX or Sunlust, etc, etc).

1 - Install GZDoom v4.11.3 Windows 64-bit
https://zdoom.org/downloads

2 - Vanilla Doom 3D Models for Doom I & II addon
Mod DB com

(3D_Models.zip) => 3D_Models.pk3
https://www.moddb.com/games/doom/addons/vanilla-doom-3d-models-for-doom-i-ii

3 - I have a very good weapons models, tried, but can't find where I got them from, sorry.
"3D_models_weapons.wad"

4 - Just put all you want to use alongside gzdoom.exe

5 - Select all you want, drop it on gzdoom.exe, click on "Play Game".
(Vulkan preferred).

(ZDL the external launcher utility, not maintained, doesn't seem to work anymore.)

Considering I was introduced into the PC gaming world through my cousin, I'm not entirely sure when he showed me this. At least it never stuck with me the same way when he first launched Wolfenstein 3D. I remember we were at a family gathering for Christmas and he brought it over to kick off on my "sophisticated" uncle's PC to get the family reaction. Needless to say, they were all blown away and when he opened a door that had a guard dog right behind it, a few gasped in terror, rofl. Man, how times have changed.

Though I remember I owned Doom (was it 2?) on SNES at one point before I ever got my own PC. Life was simpler in the 90s

So cool to have Carmack and Romero together for this milestone. Doom is a masterpiece. Going to check out SIGIL II as well.

It's a long shot but here is to hoping they can do something for the 30th anniversary of Quake in 3 years too Quake has always been my favorite, one of the most groundbreaking games ever made.

I rememeber trying to explain this to a friend in highschool as "Eye of the beholder with smooth movement, and guns, and you can fight the monsters together or each other and you move independantly but you need your own computer and a special cable and networking cards you have to iniitalise in DOS!"

I had to watch the first few minutes through my fingers, Romero didn't know how to reset his autofocus (the trick is to put your hand infront of the camera so it focuses on your hand, and then slooly bring it back to be in-line with your face, so the autofocus follows), and wasn't muxing his mic to mono, so he was only coming out of the left channel. He fixed it quickly enough, but man, LOL.

Wow, now I'm old, officially I'm ok with it, because I am happy to have been there when PC gaming was at that stage in its lifecycle. DOOM had such a profound impact on everything gaming at that stage it's hard to describe. I remember playing an early beta where there were knuckle dusters in, I might have dreamt it, because... you know 30 years ago

I am still an avid gamer, my reflexes are slower, but now more so than ever, I am excited for what the future holds for gaming. The meaning of life to me personally, is meaningful relationships and meaningful experiences and even though DOOM and its many LAN parties and laughs with friends, has provided that virtually, it still counts.
