D&D RPG Project Baxter Announced

Starbreeze Entertainment announces Project Baxter, a codenamed upcoming RPG in the Dungeons and Dragons setting with a license from Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast. This post has the news and some concept art that looks strangely like Doctor Strange. Here's word:
Starbreeze Entertainment today announces that it has licensed the world’s greatest roleplaying game – Dungeons & Dragons® – to be used in the upcoming Project Baxter game. Starbreeze licenses the IP from Wizards of the Coast, the IP-holder of Dungeons & Dragons® and a division of Hasbro, Inc. The upcoming game is planned to be released in 2026, with Starbreeze acting both as developer and publisher.

The game, with the internal codename Project Baxter, set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons® will carry the signature Starbreeze game cornerstones of co-operative multiplayer, lifetime commitment through a Games as a Service-model, community engagement and a larger than life experience. Project Baxter will launch on all major platforms in 2026 and include cross-play. The game will be produced in Unreal Engine 5.

Unreal 5 and cross-platform play? This could be good if they do it right with big semi-random dungeons and an easy to use grouping tool.

So this is going to be the poorly
implemented clone of Vermintide with the D&D branding?
I should be coding.

If this is a first person co-op dungeon crawler it would be my dream game.

Really wish somebody would take up the mantle of what NWN tried to do and create a comprehensive online D&D toolset and engine. Easy custom maps, scripting, characters, you name it... we should be at the point where we can play D&D campaigns online in a BG3-like engine with our own custom campaigns. Roll20 is good for the rules but I'd like to see somebody leverage what a computer can do instead of aping the look and feel of a low-budget TTRP experience.

Starbreeze + GaaS = hard pass. Unless they're talking a new NWN and selling DLC as xpacs, etc.

Poor souls won’t even know what hit them when the inevitable comparisons with the BG3 behemoth are going to be made. It was nice knowing you, Starbreeze. A D&D RPG as a swansong project is a decent choice. Maybe you’ll at least go out with a mini-bang.

This note in the announcement made me laugh very loudly "....will carry the signature Starbreeze game cornerstones of co-operative multiplayer, lifetime commitment through a Games as a Service-model..."

Lifetime commitment through GaaS... not even sure how to respond to that without getting too snarky, I'm sure someone more witty than me will have a good hilarious retort

But, they did make The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, which was way better than it had any right to be, and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, which I thought was reasonably good.

Let's not forget Overkill's The Walking Dead - which was such a flop that Robert Kirkman disowned it, the console versions were cancelled, and the PC version was pulled from all storefronts. Sure, Starbreeze only published it and weren't the developers, but if they were willing to put this thing out on the market then you seriously have to wonder about their quality control.

Same thoughts here. With the success of BG3 I am thinking most publishers will be looking for anything D&D-related for some lucrative coattail-riding action...
That kind of inevitable flop will cost tons of monee! 🦀💸

Not to mention that D&D movie from a couple years ago was damn good.

Hrm, I was trying to think of what games Starbreeze made that I actually liked, because I didn't like the Payday games at all.

But, they did make The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, which was way better than it had any right to be, and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, which I thought was reasonably good.

So I'm cautiously optimistic about their D&D project.
