More on New id Games

As a follow-up to the earlier terse press release about new games from id Software being announced at next month's QuakeCon event (story), we received another, slightly less cryptic announcement specifying that a press conference will be held on Friday August 10, 2:00 PM CDT (3:00 PM EDT), to be followed by a keynote address by John Carmack. Here's the deal, again in AOL-friendly all-caps:
ID SOFTWARE PRESS CONFERENCE AT QUAKECON 2001

DATE: FRIDAY, AUG. 10
TIME: 2 P.M.
LOCATION: THE MESQUITE CONVENTION CENTER/HAMPTON INN & SUITES -- MESQUITE, TEXAS

KEYNOTE ADDRESS BY JOHN CARMACK WILL IMMEDIATELY FOLLOW THE PRESS CONFERENCE

Acknowledging plot development is not a strong point of the company, id is including a sheet of acid with every game to increase game "immersion."

You people make me sick. It's not even 6:30 EST and there are already 13 comments. I thought *I* was up early...

Yeah, there you see what you get by living in the wrong time zone! You miss all the good stuff ;). It's 12:48 here (GMT+1) and I've been awake for over two hours already (wooohooo) ;). Well ... moderately awake anyway.

Why doesn't the US switch to a proper (i.e. european) time? Granted, it will be dark all day but there are also advantages. I won't get any calls in the middle of the night anymore, for one thing

I cannot believe what kind of nonsense I post today. Probably shouldn't have gotten up so early ;).

Nope They'll announce that the new doom game will run exclusively on hardware from BitBoys

I thought a bit about this and finally came up with the only possible solution for this mystery:

Carmack is going to announce that he is leaving id to join Romero at his new company MonkeyStone and make Daikatana 2.
Meanwhile id will announce that, lacking a good in-house engine, they changed the setting and name of Doom 3. It will now be called "Commander Keen 3D" and use the current LithTech engine.
The second new game from id will be outsourced to Rogue and will have the working title "The DOOM guy in the land of the babes", featuring the strong, charismatic main character from the DOOM games in a "mass-market" environment.

There. You see it's quite obvious once you get right down to it. Believe me: that's exactly what is going to happen

No, really. Keep your expectations down. This is marketing and they'll probably announce that they're going to make an announcement at next years E3 or something...

Lets just wait and see what they are planning, ok? it seems that so much hassle around DOOM N64 is a bit far-fetched and that Carmack managed to merge reality with games is a bit over-the-top concept right now... so I hope someone at id can shed some light on this...

You lier... I heard, from Carmack himself, that games are just a precomception of reality itself. The only way to acutally interpert the reality is to be the reality itself. so Carmack has, well.. according to himself, found a way to biomechanically transerve the common idea of global enhancement into something truly meaningfull. What that is to us simple mortals could not possibly be understand.. but will. yes will. soon enough.

I heard from an inside source that after a long research stint, John Carmack realized that polygons, much like the internet, are just a fad and will fade out in a few years anyway. So the big news is that id is going back to sprite-based games.

My understanding is the press conference and other events are all open to any QuakeCon attendee.

By the way, why didn't you enter the tournament?

You're all off the mark.

Carmack figured out a way to merge polygons with reality. But only so he could optionally turn off that giant ball of fire in the sky.

'bad fire ... bad fire ... bad fire burn my skin ... away fire!'

A press conference. A Q&A session. What the heck has id been up to? What could possibly rate such extravagant media hype? I'm not sure, but I don't think they've done this before.

Geez...I thought a new DOOM game was huge.

This announcement should really cause the gaming community to freak. It's going to be amazing to actually be there during everything

<sarcasm>Oh yeah, nice guess there especially since Doom 3 isn't even released yet.</sarcasm>

Although, as an expension pack to Doom 3, it wouldn't be bad seeing Doom 1 and 2 remade for Doom 3.
