Play Diablo IV for Free

Diablo IV is currently free to try on Steam, where everyone has a week to check out the Windows edition of the action/RPG sequel. It's pretty apparent Steam is not the game's native territory, as there's no accompanying announcement, and here's the entirety of the low-effort description on the store:
Join the fight for Sanctuary in Diablo IV, the ultimate action RPG adventure. Experience the critically acclaimed campaign and new seasonal content.

Love Sacred 2 -installed, play a little now and then-.....

Sacred 2 and all of its secret rock show glory is absolutely a cornerstone piece of my "always installed" selection. Sacred 2 was a masterful arpg and the fact that they keep missing the target on the following games in the series is disappointing.

In an "it's even dumber than it sounds", apparently this just gives you access to the free trial edition of the game (which is always available on battle.net). So you can only play until level 20. Which you'll reach even faster thanks the the xp boost going on.

Why is it a "limited time only" on Steam? Only the idiots at Blizzard know.

What lvl do you need to be at to be able to finish the game?

You mean finish the campaign? You should be at/around level 45 - 50+ when finishing the campaign. I actually played a Necromancer at release to level 72. I took it slow the first time around, did lots of side stuff and finished the campaign at level 54 or something like that. It was easy-peasy.

When season 1 started, I just wanted to beeline the campaign with a Rogue-ess to get to the seasonal content. That never happened. I actually stalled and ended up underleveled for one of the later areas in the game and had no desire to grind levels because I was bored to tears at that point. In essence, the game has level scaling but it is not completely adaptive. Some regions have/require fixed level ranges.

I now started a new character (good old Frost Sorceress) for season 2 and decided to play through the campaign again. Knowing that strictly beelining would end up in trouble, I did some random side quests here and there and that worked out much better. I had no trouble with the campaign or any region at all and finished it at level 50-ish.

With the cap at level 20 for the free week, you will not really come even close to finishing the campaign, unless maybe you are some super 1337 pro gamer or something who knows all the exploits of the FOTM OP class inside out Wink .

I'm totally over ARPGs, it's a gear treadmill. Playing through Diablo 2 Resurrected this year was enough for me. Even for free can't entice me to play this.

It's a solid game that I binged for probably ~100 hours at launch and will probably return to periodically over the next several years... I don't expect more than that from any ARPG.

Main drawback with D4 is not being able to rotate the camera in a 360-degree arc. The game uses 3d characters, apparently, and a fully 3d, destructible (semi) background the game is played on, but you can't rotate the camera. The camera is fixed! Grim Dawn, released several years ago, not to mention the Larian games, including BG3, allow for full rotation of the camera--and nothing says "3d" like full camera rotation, imo...;) But it isn't needed to play--nothing is hidden or inaccessible when playing. The story, music and sound effects in D4 are great, I think, and once I start playing it is difficult to quit. D4 is nothing like D1/D2, though, if that's what you are thinking. Blizzard also keeps improving the game (constantly) and tossing in new content. I'm enjoying the game far more now than when it was released. I bought direct from Blizzard at release, and the Steam release seems rather superfluous to me...;)
You couldn't rotate the camera 25 years ago in D1, why would you need to today? /s

I suppose that might be true. However to me, the number of people who might play D4 and only found out about it because it landed on or became available via Steam is a very small group. If additional information on this is available, I'd be interested to see it. *shrug* Maybe I am wrong.

Yeah, to my mind it screams desperation. If the game was successful there would be no need to release on Steam.

It was successful, but shareholders want more. What more than grabbing those that want everything on Steam? It opens it up to an audience that would potentially never try it (even if you still need B.net installed and logged into).

That said, if you want a more classic Diablo experience and never played Diablo 2, now is the best time than ever to try it with Diablo 2 Resurrection. They did a real good job on it.

D4 still has my attention, however I only find it interesting when I log in as my Sorceress. The other classes just aren't holding my attention enough. Granted, I don't play it seeking out anything in particular. Just the occasional, I'll log in, cast spells all over the place to clear crowds, earn some XP, and log out, lol. I don't care about the items much or the overall experience. It's like an odd love it, hate it relationship that is slowly drifting away.

WaltSee, so true !

Titan Quest, Divinity Original Sin, Van Helsing, etc.
Got mods to turn the camera 360 degrees (dark voids ? who cares).

**Plus** changing the camera angle, also so I could play farther zoomed, or down to an almost over the shoulder view (Dungeon Siege, Sacred 2, Grim Dawn, Shadowgrounds, many others too, sometimes looking from below ground LOL).

Then you are truly in the worlds and capture their beauty !

Yeah, I have to say unless it takes a major upward turn I likely will never plan D4. Too bad, I was actually hoping they could pull it off.

It's shit, and no it's not well above average. Apart from the excellent art direction and the interesting overworld map, the gameplay loop in this game is an even bigger miss than Diablo 3. It's a travesty of an ARPG.

I reached that point after the free weekend pre-launch. The blatant GaaS just totally ruined the immersion and turned me off.
