MCDs refused to pay her initial request of $20k that was mostly medical expenses for the 3rd degree burns. They refused to budge from their pitiful offer of $800. Also their coffee was and is even today served hotter than other chains including starbucks. They at least led a design change in coffee cups that made it harder to spill. And the ZOMG ITS $2 MILLION DOLLAR LAWSUIT ON COFFEE press which was chosen by the jury, wasn't even the final amount. The judge reduced it to only $640k, and then the parties settled afterwards for probably much less. So the panic wasn't even warranted. The amount of the lawsuit was small even by the standards of the time. But hey, it makes for a short hot take!

Edited to add: There were a bunch of lawsuits prior to her and lawsuits that continue after her even to this day about their coffee temp and burns, so yeah you know what? If you get burned drinking their still too hot coffee and can prove it medically with third degree burns, you might be able to get medical expenses from them if you are lucky. Or maybe you'll end up being the next person having people do hot takes about you.
