Out of the Blue

"We're all very different people. We're not Watusi, we're not Spartans, we're Americans! With a capital 'A,' huh? And you know what that means? Do you? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world!"

Link of the Day: This funny typing 404 message. Yes, a different funny typing 404 message than last time. Thanks Ant.
Story of the Day: Man steals train in Italy (Ananova). Thanks Andrew Arace. Even more unbelievably, he got away! (Albeit without the train.)

Wow, that's odd, we just watched STRIPES last night, after not having seen it for a long time... It's still a classic comedy. I think I had it memorized when I was in high school!

Most of us Americans don't realize how poor and somewhat slanted our grade school history lessons are. For example, hardly any American is aware that our one major campaign into Canada ended in a humiliating defeat at Quebec City. Of course, most Canadians are taught this. Neither Korea nor Vietnam were victories by any definition. Also, Americans are not taught about the many dubious police actions/interventions/invasions that America has done in Latin America (and the Pacific for that matter) in the last hundred years or so.

I'm a patriotic American, and I'll be celebrating the 4th with everyone else tomorrow. And I happen to think that both the ideals upon which this country was founded, and the degree to which we've managed to achieve them, are both wonderful and exemplary in this world. Nevertheless, sabre-rattling and blood-thirsty militarism is not something to be proud of. That is more the rhetoric of the Slobodan Milosevics of the world, not the Thomas Jeffersons. That kind of ugly patriotism, and also an ignorance of even our own history (much less the rest of the world's) is a big part of what the rest of the world has so little patience for from us. C'mon, we can be better than that. And learn your history and get beyond propganda.

You took a perfectly good and nostalgic conversation about one of the best movies of all time and turned it into a flame war about what? Wars. If you are going to start a flame war and ruin a conversation as important as this, at least have the common courtesy not to start one about "flames" or "wars." It's doubly annoying when the topic of your flame war is one of the words that describes what you are doing.

It's like having a heated debate about heated debates.

Am I crazy, or is anyone else insulted?

...he posted it in relation to the upcoming American holiday, choosing an appropriate yet self-depecating quote designed to minimize the inevitable "oh yeah, that dumb American holiday..." "America kicks butt!" "what about Vietnam?" "blah blah blah"... Apparently it failed already, didn't take more than 5 replies to get it started

Yeah, I know that. What I meant was, why was Blue posting it? Just for the hell of it? Did he watch Stripes last night? Does he have a Bill Murray fetish developing? (he seems to be a big Groundhog Day fan too) etc.

::not starting a flame, just commenting::
American soldiers did kick ass in Korea, even against a billion Chinese troops. Politics stopped it at the original demarcation line, but the troops kicked ass.

In Vietnam, I believe we "won" every major engagement.
But, when the politicians think winning is having a higher body count and not holding territory, the war is doomed. Johnson should've bombed Hanoi until it was a hole in the ground. Everytime he put restrictions on bombing and other combat actions, the NVA laughed at us. If Bush had put the same restrictions on Kuwait, it could've had similar trouble.

"Who here cried when Old Yeller died?"

They are in the army hangar preparing for the demonstration for General Barnaky. They ultimately go on to win it (with style and creativity as opposed to discipline and skill) and become the men that General Barnaky (sp?) uses for the EM-50 project. Needless to say, although he was "too old for this sh*t," the big-toe otherwise known as Sgt. Hulka was done proud.

The two MP chicks are betties btw...

"Lighten up, Francis..."
