AMD Launches FSR 3 and Fluid Motion Frames

Today is a big day for owners of AMD graphics cards as it marks the launch of FSR 3, a new version of AMD's upscaling and frame generation technology. Word is: "AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution 3 transforms gaming experiences with massive and responsive framerates in supported games using a combination of super resolution temporal upscaling technology, frame generation using AMD Fluid Motion Frames3 (AFMF) technology, and built-in latency reduction technology." FSR 3 support is now available in Forspoken, will arrive later today in Immortals of Aveum, and there's a list of other games in the process of implementation. Here's the previously released AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 First Look trailer with a look. Additionally, this article announces the launch of a preview driver with a technical preview of AMD Fluid Motion Frames. Here's an explanation of that: "AFMF adds frame generation technology to DirectX® 11 and 12 games on AMD Radeon™ RX 7000 Series Desktop Graphics." Here's more from this blog post on the launch of FSR 3:
The two key updates in AMD FSR 3 are frame generation and the new “Native AA” quality mode. FSR 3 frame generation uses an enhanced version of AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) optical flow technology and temporal game data such as motion vectors to generate additional high-quality frames for a higher framerate in supported games, up to 2x2. You can learn more technical details about how FSR 3 frame generation works in our new in-depth blog on GPUOpen.

When combined with super resolution upscaling, this technology enables massive framerates in supported games, even at 4K using the highest game settings. Frame generation can be used with any of the AMD FSR upscaling quality modes, including “Quality” and “Performance”, so the ratio of upscaling image quality to performance can be configured to suit individual preferences.

The new “Native AA” (Native Anti-Aliasing) quality mode applies high-quality anti-aliasing and sharpening without any upscaling for improved image quality over native resolution. There is a modest performance cost when using this new mode, but when combined with frame generation, “Native AA” mode can provide enhanced image quality and a boost in framerate.

Came here to post the same. I guess there weren't any bigger titles that came out this year.
At least this explains why Aveum had a player boost, it's FSR 3 reviewers. haha.

Three years on and still nothing else is even close. I know it cost CDPR a fortune to build Red Engine to its current state so I understand why they are dropping it for Unreal, but the games absolutely unparalleled fidelity and unique look really makes it stand out. I mourn the Red Engine.

In the future, the games will be just classic text adventures with some AI turning this into images/graphics based on your personal preferences and the descriptions in the text in real time. This should make everyone happy because they will only see things and persons that they like on their screens.

And it will perfect the impenetrable social bubbles because there will be less and less new and diverse experiences for gamers. Same might happen with movies in the future... and then the news...

I hope it won't happen. Or that I will be gone before that happens. So, please take your time, almighty AI gods.

One thing I didn't realize was that you can activate Frame Generation without activating DLSS, because in games like Cyberpunk 2077, activating FG also flicks the DLSS switch. However, when you force the DLSS switch back off, it often gives the best results. To me FG gives you more FPS without the loss in image quality that I get from DLSS, I'm currently using it to play Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty with Path Tracing. The only downside is that since the FG frames are inserted artificially in the render pipeline, the responsiveness of the game will feel like the actual fps of the game, for example a game that would render in 30 fps but gets 60 fps with FG will feel as responsive as a 30 fps game.

Frame generation seems to be a big deal in places like path tracing where you may not be able to hit 60fps even on the best video card. I see those 100+ fps marks and I am like what ever... if I can get 60-80 I am happy. ALSO imo you are only going to get good quality results if your doing no more then a one for one frame generation, so double the frame rate.. works for me. Many times when you see 3x the frame rates, most of of your data/frames are ai generated and that can lead to some ugly artifacts.

However frame generation I have doubt can be done without special hardware. Seems like too much magic to just poof.. software solution.

Frame generation is going to become standard procedure for games maintaining their performance targets, just as upscaling has started to recently and dynamic resolution did years ago. AMD pretty much has to be able to support it on their hardware in order to compete, especially if they want to keep doing business with console makers.

FSR2 has been nice for 4k gaming, but I really want a bigger uplift. I've put Starfield on hold until I'm able to hit 60fps consistently on my 6900xt at ultra or high. Baldur's Gate 3 has been a dream... averaging about 100fps at 4k/Ultra with FSR.

I think its awesome with this new tech, we are living in the freaking future. Competition is good, but ideally, I'd like to see an open source tech that could work on any GPU. But, selling points I guess is important..

Reminds me a bit of that example with 2 icecream sellers on a long beach. Logically the two sellers would stand 1/4 and 3/4 from the one end, dividing the beach in two, and everyone on the beach has the shortest possible distance to the icecream, and both would sell more, but competition will drive each seller towards the middle, so they end up back-to-back in the middle of the beach

Gimmicks? Might want to crawl out of that rock there. You know we probably wouldn't have cyberpunk in the news HALF as much as we do if it wasn't for Nvidias Gimmicks. And all because of that well you might as well give it GOTY again for 2023 because it has new content and still looks better than everything out there. And les not forget the countless videos about starfield not being praise about the game even though the game wasn't bad, but rather its choice not to support dlss on launch. Something that was modded in less than 24 hours after release by users.

Full rasterization graphics is a shit show and nvidia is doing a lot to get us out of that hole. AMD found the gas peddle for speed but has forgotten all about innovation. I am not going regurgitate all of digital foundries videos so if you want to see where graphics are heading now thanks to nvidias gimmicks, feel free to refresh yourself.

I fully support competition and I welcome AMDs attempts to duplicate nvidias headline making technologies, after all it really doesn't matter who releases what first, it matters who has what at the better price point at the time I choose to update my video card. FSR 2.0 has been a great thing for them and it isn't just amd graphic card buyers who have enjoyed it but FSR tech has been similarly deployed in the console market with great success. It may not be the best upscaler, but in time maybe when AMD starts fabricating their cards with the same amount of ai and tensor core power as nvidia, they will tweak their own fsr to utilize ai reconstruction and the like. Until then, I am happy to spend a little more money on nvidia.

Dark side of gaming did a quick comparison of DLSS 3 vs FSR 3 on the 2 titles that support both (Forespoken and Immortals of Aveum).

Dark side of gaming - comparison link

Summary is as follows:
Although FSR 3.0 Frame Generation can push higher framerates, the overall gaming experience is worse than DLSS 3 Frame Generation. DLSS 3 Frame Generation currently wins in both smoothness and image quality. And, if you force VSync in FSR 3.0, DLSS 3 Frame Generation will also win in responsiveness. So, while this is a good start for FSR 3.0, it’s still way behind DLSS 3

No shit, dude. I'm also overjoyed that they have decided to go with the flagship titles of the 2023 gaming year to debut their much anticipated tech. Too bad that Gollum is not on the list. That would have completed a trilogy of awesomeness and the three topmost GOTY contenders. Anyway, what a time to be alive!

Hope it's good and congrats to users and AMD.

Remember folks, competition and AMD success means less price gouging and abuses from Nvidia.

considering digital foundry was not given early access to do a video, I am not holding my breath on this being a magic lamp for gaming. I am sure AMD is hustling to copy Nvidias technologies so everyone isn't dlss this and dlss that every time a new game comes out, but DF is the premier spot for launching these technologies. Any video AMD wants to thrown on their own channel has as much weight as a pre rendered video. The videos yield so many questions that don't get answered that I have shelved it to the "Don't fucking care" bin.
