Out of the Blue

Happy National Coffee Day! I think I'll drink a cup or two to celebrate. Okay, now that I'm properly caffeinated, I'll rant a bit about a discovery that I've made while updating some hardware. To my surprise I've learned you cannot completely shut down an Xbox One console. Despite Microsoft making a big deal about pushing to shut down newer Xboxes rather than putting them to sleep to save power, when you do a full shutdown on an Xbox One, it continues to supply power via USB. There is no setting to turn this off, and in a thoroughly modern aggravation, there isn't even a physical power switch to override the madness. I know these are older consoles, but there are tens of millions of them out in the wild, and Microsoft should be ashamed of not providing any way to stop them from drawing phantom power other than physically unplugging them.

Yeah, I was still subscribed to Netflix when I got the notice it was cancelled. Before streaming it was the bomb.

Not a horror fan, but I do like some horror. I've never seen Cabin in the Woods, and had no idea what it was even about, but a podcast I follow, Filmsack, is 'sacking' it this week. I've discovered a lot of movie's I'd normally never watch by watching it for Filmsack. I was going to pass, but once I read up on the movie, I was intrigued. Not your usual horror movie. Will likely watch it tonight.
Cabin in the Woods is both a deconstruction of the horror genre, while still being an entry into it. It's very good and quite clever. It helps if you've seen a dozen or so of the top horror movies so you can appreciate what they're going for.

Rinsed that with Killer Joe’ (William Friedkin, 2011) with Matthew McConaughey in a memorable interpretation, deservedly a Saturn Award for Best Actor.

Horror is my favorite genre. I can't wait to be able to watch Evil Dead Rise. The trailer was very creepy.
Horror has been undergoing a bit of a renaissance the past decade or so, with some amazing creativity. This is probably due to the lower risk that comes with lower budgets. Some of my favorites:
- It Follows
- Cabin in the Woods
- Babadook
- Under the Skin
- The VVitch
- Let the Right One In (and it's remake Let Me In)

you should check out the new castlevania series on netflix. phenomenal. none of the awkward writing that really bugged me about the first series.

I'm finishing up 'Edgerunners', then that will be my next one. Thanks!

oof. edgerunners. what an emotional rollercoaster. the perfect cyberpunk story imo - young idealists fighting for love against a corrupt system. i hope they make a sequel.

Yup, this is true. Xbox One's suck up power when they're plugged in. Also the regular previous older generation Xbox One models have a silly loud fan in the power supply that doesn't stop making noise unless you unplug it

Only like those movies where the horror is suggested (The Ring, Lights out, Let Me In -the swedish work of art, not the USA wallmart version-, etc).
Dislike blood and amputations galore, I read the news for that.

If possible give me intelligent consistent stories not ridiculously flawed ones (Us, Signs).

As for Evil Dead Rise's eggs, some peppered cheese and garlic and I'm eating that dish Chef

Why Jaws and Barbie were such blockbusters.

As a hobbyist movie connoisseur (self-appointed) this title got me. It was a reasonable take. JAWS is one of my personaI cinematic masterpieces of all time. I haven't seen Barbie, but the charm of it is obvious in the trailers and promos. I would say that marketing is essential, but that alone will not cut it if the movie sucks. On top of a good marketing strategy, a movie has to have a hook. Jaws definitely did, and seeing how much of a phenomenon Barbie was, it obviously had one too.
