Counter-Strike 2 Released

Valve officially announces the launch of Counter-Strike 2, saying the not-unexpected follow-up is now free-to-play with an optional Prime Status upgrade. This first-person shooter series started as a modification back in the day, and the new installment looks to continue its tactics-steeped traditions. Word is: "Built on the Source 2 engine, Counter-Strike 2 is modernized with realistic physically-based rendering, state of the art networking, and upgraded Community Workshop tools." The Counter-Strike 2 Website is updated with the news. There's a post from NVIDIA discussing hardware and software support for the game and AMD has added Counter-Strike 2 to the release notes for its recent version 23.9.3 drivers. Here's the Launch Trailer and word:
For over two decades, Counter-Strike has offered an elite competitive experience, one shaped by millions of players from across the globe. And now the next chapter in the CS story is about to begin. This is Counter-Strike 2.

A free upgrade to CS:GO, Counter-Strike 2 marks the largest technical leap in Counter-Strike’s history. Built on the Source 2 engine, Counter-Strike 2 is modernized with realistic physically-based rendering, state of the art networking, and upgraded Community Workshop tools.

In addition to the classic objective-focused gameplay that Counter-Strike pioneered in 1999, Counter-Strike 2 features:

  • All-new CS Ratings with the updated Premier mode
  • Global and Regional leaderboards
  • Upgraded and overhauled maps
  • Game-changing dynamic smoke grenades
  • Tick-rate-independent gameplay
  • Redesigned visual effects and audio
  • All items from CS:GO moving forward to CS2

They removed CS-GO from everyone's Steam Library. CS2 is missing a bunch of content from CS GO. CS2 is free to play but I'm wondering if they'll try to start selling that already bought content (for those who bought it before it became free to play) back to people as DLC or if they are still working on it or if it's gone for good.

Right click into beta mode, "csgo demo viewer" is 'classic csgo' according to community/pre cs2 servers.

y but I'm wondering if they'll try to start selling that already bought content (for those who bought it before it became free to play) back to people as DLC or if they are still working on it or if it's gone for good.

Everything in CSGO has been ported to cs2.

Has anyone found out how to play arms race in CS2? For a casual players like me that was an important game mode.

L4D2 at release was not a huge jump over the original, and many thought (like me) that the level design was a big step backwards.

It's just you. This is probably the most played FPS and eSports game in the world. Refinement to graphical, audio, better netcode, lower input latency, new gameplay features, and QoL improvements over the years is really the way to go. Then it's looked at sorta like real sports are which have refinements to the rules and broadcasts (720p/1080i, now 4K, etc) for better visuals.

Damn I remember back when Beta 6 was coming out, 1.6. Source, and GO. This really must be the greatest FPS of all time. To think I considered paying another $70 for COD 45 or whatever. Counter-Strike 2 looks awesome, gonna download this over the weekend and try and grab a friend to play.

Left 4 Dead 2 was not that big of a graphical leap over the first but was a vastly superior game. Same with Portal 2. I don't play CS so I can't speak to this one - just pointing out that graphics don't really matter much. Can't wait to see if Valve ever learns how to count to 3...

Is it just me or does this look exactly the same as the previous CS:Whataver it was called? Seems like at least from a visual fidelity and gameplay experience perspective, nothing significant has changed.

I mean, as someone whose basically had some iteration of CS installed since beta 1.4 in like 1999, I can confirm, this one has significant updates to the original CS GO. Not just in the visuals, but gameplay impacting ones as well. Most notably the smoke and how it can be utilized this time around. It actually has volume to it and interacts with whether you shoot bullets through it or launch a nade at it. You can try to see what's behind it by spraying bullets into it or tossing a nade and the smoke disperses for a second.

Other than that however, I'd say it's mostly changed to keep it relevant and fresh. Obviously a fresh coat of paint and it does look super clean visually. The weapons are sharp and appear HD in comparison to the original CSGO. Some weapon spray patterns have changed (AK-47) and to me, it feels better though I know not all share that thought. Sound effects also got an upgrade and sound more loud and realistic in comparison to CSGO.

Overall, if you didn't like CSGO, you're not going to like this one much more. It's the same game with a fresh look and some gameplay tweaks to better the experience. Though I don't think they're significant enough to bring someone who never liked the originals into it.

Hey, maybe we'll get Counter Strike 3, Left 4 Dead 3, Team Fortress 3, Portal 3, and Half-Life 3 in all at once.

And put all in a single pack like the Orange box?

i googled if my 6gb 1060(don't laugh.) would be adequate It basically said "LOL, no"

Launched it today, silky smooth (at least in practice) 60 fps with smoke/fire grenades being popped. Like I was laying csgo.

As someone who first played CS in '99, this is (graphically/engine wise) one hell of an update.

Yup, it looks quite similar. The official website does a good job pointing out all the evolutionary changes.

So, there's still no way to have larger teams than 5 vs 5? In CS-Source, we could have 16 vs 16.

I tried messing around with a bot match. There's no way to increase bot skill? They're ridiculously easy.

I like CS-Source much better. I didn't like or play CS-GO much. This seems like it's basically CS-GO with a different engine.
