Then I looked at the company online and saw a 2.0 review on Google on two ratings and decided they were sketchy. After I deleted it I realized that was for the company, not the product. But still...
I don't see the big benefit to free software offers that we're only pretty sure aren't scams.

No worries, I consider myself lucky if I'm making any sense at all, most of the time.

RedEye9, your probably correct didn't even think about the longevity of it, since I've never done a Backup before.

I’m a sucker for free software and looked at the offer. But the thought of “subscription” backup software gives me the willies.
With too many questions I didn’t care to research the answers for, like “Can I restore a backup if the subscription has lapsed?” etc.
Besides, there’s always open source https://clonezilla.org/

First sorry to hear you are having such a bad year. That said...

Definitely not a good year, but definitely the basis of a country song -- if you had lost your pickup truck too, it would be a guaranteed hit. These types of things happen and how people deal with it varies as widely as people themselves do. My spin? Not much you could do about the cat or your mother, so grieve as appropriate and try to move on. As for the wife, just realize you are far from alone on that front, last I heard over 50% marriages (in the US) were ending in divorce. It is inevitable that people will change and that change is likely to put stress on such an intimate relationship. That any marriage lasts the couple's lifetime is amazing.
